World Of Hempy

I was thinking the same thing , should be closer to that oz. Depending on how much veg time you give them and if you do some training on them you might get more.
Well I dont know exactly how long they have been vegging for but they're around 9-12" tall right now. I have 1 gal water jugs so if I cut the top half off would it still be an actual 1 gal jug? lol

I also need to figure out how to tape the jugs so its not clear

These are my 1week old GDP clones after a light seaweed foliar feed. They are so damn healthy its unreal. I can pick any shade of green I like with just a slight tweek of 'veg' solution. I use tap water and never pH down. .... I don't pH down because I don't want to give phosphoric acid to plants craving nitrogen.

A GDP after about 4 weeks. .. at this stage I still don't use pH down product. The pH of the solution is taken within range by the use of bloom nutrients and additives. Further to this, the several processes within the substrate and plant lower the pH in the Hempy further.

OK guys. I want to share with you something.

First a story; My grow room is on a very slight sloping gradient. This means that the run-off pools at one end of the tubs first, and will eventually reach the Hempys drainage hole at one before the others. The graphic demonstrates it.

So what was interesting was that before I realized this was happening I noticed something was happening to the plants at the 'deep' end. The plants seemed to be developing larger buds with more crystals, however the leaf also looked locked out of certain elements. .. I then noticed that roots had been growing out of the Hempy drainage holes and feeding on the toxic looking run-off in the tub. ...(Hmm Bigger buds but lockout)

... well. .. I took note of what was occurring and moved on. I bought a wet-vac and made sure the tub never filled to that level.

FFW>> this week. Now by accident it's kinda happened again. I first noticed something was happening because the buds of that GDP Hempy was noticeably bigger, but also whiter and covered with more crystals. I also noticed the leaf was a strange color and pattern but otherwise healthy. Then it twigged. I pulled the Hempy out of the SOG and looked, NO DRAINAGE HOLES. I must have forgot to pierce them.

So this Hempy has had all the feed it wants and effectively is all res. I should add at this point I have NOT been drowning it because I now use a spray-gun to feed. It has developed purple color to BOTH leaf and bud where the other clone has none. wtf?

So something strange and to me exciting has occurred. .... I still believe in drainage holes but I am forced to the conclusion that in a 2L hempy the traditional height of the res holes at 2.25" is too low.

I strongly suspect that 4" minimum will work better. (2L being about 9" high). I'll be doing some trials to find out whats what.

Interesting idea Moe I also had a hempy in one gallon last run that went whole run with no drainage hole...and the plant did quite well. The roots were a bit uglier at the end but it cropped just fine. I also didnt drown my plants in water but gave them smaller amounts daily.

Is that a seed pod on top of your bud or just an enormous calyx?

I assume its a Calyx ... I often see that in my plants of all strains but never had a seed yet. Maybe others can tell me ??? Its certainly not uncommon for me to see that. AGAIN wtf?? LOL

Hey moe... the nute lockout to ur clone could be responsible for the purpling. Nute deficiencies are known to bring out the purple in purple gene strains.

Moe, what you concider toxic I use as a bennificial, I take the run off and feed to house plants and some indoor veggies, they love it by the way.

My run off is in a shop vac mixed with dog hair and saw dust. Probably not too enticing to the houseplants at that point!

I completely agree. but ... that would not explain larger bud with more crystals. That clone ist the only one out of 5 to look like that, it just happens to have no drainage holes.

What I am 100% certain of is that it is NEVER a good thing to let the Hempy dry completly. Every experience I have had points me to believe that they are better kept moist. ... I will now be FAR more diligent and frequent with feeding and NEVER let them dry out too much.

It seems obvious to me now but some people still advise to let it go dry.

That's what I was talking about watering every day cuz I don't believe in letting hydro dry out either. If the mix is good and oxygenated its not possible to overdo! Although it starts leaning more towards a dwc at that point :)

Precisely. ... I'll try 36hrs or so. I'll let the top 1/3 or so dry then feed. Definitely not wait till the plant is only feeding off the res which I have been doing on occasion.

My plants were all looking pretty happy so what's any intelligent person gonna do? Bump up the nutes another 25% that's what! I do so much shit out of boredom instead of a rational idea when it comes to growing! 50% of the time it works every time! Hey it's how I learn things though :)

I believe it's very important to get them to a nice healthy lustrous green before they start to flower. Then one can concentrate on the P/K and the plant has enough built in (N) to carry it through till crop. .... I'm beginning to think this stage is just as important as the flower stage in respect to eventual success. .. I now plan to get my 2L's as dark green as possible (without phytotoxicity) before they start to show flower. This means upping the (N) and no LUCAS until bud shows.

ok i think i got this... back in the day when i first started using smart pots, i used to put plant dishes under my smart pots to collect the run off. at first i started to suck out the run off from the dish using a turkey baser. after a couple of times of forgeting to suck out the run off i noticed that my plants would eventually drink up the remaining nutrients in the dish. thinking this was good, i allowed it to continue. for a while my plants were growing amazingly well due to the increase in nutrients it was provided. however, during flower the signs of a nute lock out started to appear and i realized that my medium was in fact toxic as hell. (Yes this was a noob mistake but now i know better). This was because all the salts from my nutes were not able to drain out of my pots completely allowing it to remove the salt build up. instead, the medium was just getting hotter with each watering.

I think this is whats happening. since your are flowering from clone, you first got an increase in growth from the increase in nutrients. however, you are now just starting to see the first signs of the nute lockout 4 weeks in. eventually your medium will get too toxic and give your some serious problems. good thing you caught it now.

on another note... i totally agree with not allowing the medium to completely dry out. i believe coco has a 70/30 water to air retention rate if im not mistaken. it might be 60/40. this means that as long as the coco has the ability to drain, no matter how much i water it, it will still retain only 70 or 60 percent water to 30 or 40 percent air in the medium. the only thing that will change is that your rez will be full of water more frequently. there is no reason for me to let the coco completely or near completely dry out as it wont do me any good.

just my thoughts....

What you say sounds 100% feasible and correct. I too predict the lockout to eventually cause progressively greater negatives. I plan on piercing a hole in the Hempy when lights go on. ... The plant wants fresh nutes and not the build-ups caught in the Hempy.

Whats interesting though is the level of wetness the roots can take. ... for me it just underlines the 'never let dry' school of thought.
