Your thoughts on genetically modified Food ?

monsanto.jpg From crops being roundup ready ..to terminator seeds to tomatoes that don't rot all the way to corn that pretty much bleeds poison to kill the insects that feed on it ... I plain to cover just about everything good or bad there is know about this .. Are generation is the 1st to ever have something like this effect are diet are health .. And way in which we farm and cultivate this planet .. Now not to mislead you but I my self am strongly against gmo's but.. "It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it". Aristotle. . So now I do entertain both the idea that we need them and the idea that we don't .. What I would like do with this thread is to educate learn and hear your thoughts options and your facts on this subject ...

I have to ask the "how's" and "why's" of each particular situation, how they arise and the purpose they serve. Terminator seeds and methods that involve improving upon qualities to encourage monoculture and satisfy consumer appeal I don't agree with, but for ease of cultivation and in response to certain pests (to reduce pesticide usage, etc) then should take advantage. I'd only have to be honest and say that I'd jump at the chance to enhance my pot to new heights with double thc percentages and so forth.

Considering these are chemically and genetically altered, we have no idea what the long-term effect will be on people who ingest them on a regular basis.

Just like all the "safe" drugs released by the FDA that are/were later recalled for killing people/causing cancer etc... we won't know the full fallout from this for YEARS.. by then, the soil will be so saturated with Monsanto crap that nothing "natural" will be able to be grown there for a generation or more...

if we weren't meant to mess with nature why did we evolve thumbs?

just because normally evolution takes billions of years doesn't mean it cant occur faster, in science we call these variables. are we not the human variable? is our interaction with the universe not natural? even if it means our own destruction?

come to terms with nature and you will have come to terms with science. our "science" is just a part of nature, on a large scale you could just say humans are just groups of molecules that preforms a specific job on earth.

so our creation of GMO and everything else we have created are completely natural and a part of evolution.

to be precise we are not the only organism nor wil we be the last, to alter our environment in order to survive.

So--- Tomatoes altered with the DNA from arctic fish is just nature 'sped-up" ?
Sorry- but I haven't seen that many tomatoes swimming upstream to spawn lately!

Chemicals and F***ing with genetics between species etc... IMO-- not kewl, not natural, and we will not know the extent of the damage for a couple generations...

Just like DDT/DES etc... they think it's safe until the people effected by it start having babies with severe defects, or having weird types of cancers.....

I can see were you coming form this and I don't really reject the notion that it is in are very nature to alter the environment for survival .. But one very real history lesson that played out for most of are parents and some of the wiser/elders here on rollitup .. Was the very wide spread use of DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) back in the 40's and 50's I have a old organic gardening book laying around some where the book claimed if the stoped using DDT today this was a old book mine you that 4 PPB " 4 parts per billion " of ddt found in any food grown on farmland that used DDT for the next 100 years ... I mean will are kids talk about round up and gmo's the same way we talk about DDT usage today ?

it is possible that both fish and tomatoe have the same origin DNA. but essentially yes nature sped up. the damage in further generations? hmmm, well the damage is what the damage is that is the point of experimentation ant testing before a product is released. GMO and DNA splicing is not new, its just now hitting the market in major ways, and people are definitely over reacting. but this shit has been going on since like the 80s generations of testing has been passed.

So here something that would creep me out if I lived in a state like Nebraska "corn states" quote from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genetically_modified_maize Effects of Bt corn on nontarget insectsIn May 1999, a laboratory at Cornell University published the results from a laboratory trial that appeared to indicate the pollen of genetically modified Bt corn presented a threat to monarch caterpillars. Unlike many pesticides, the Bt-corn has been shown to have no effect on many "nontarget" organisms -- pollinators such as honeybees or beneficial predators of pests like ladybugs. But the Bt-modified corn produces pollen containing crystalline endotoxin from the bacterium genes. When this corn pollen is dispersed by the wind, it lands on other plants, including milkweed, the exclusive food of monarch caterpillars and commonly found around cornfields. In the laboratory tests, monarchs fed milkweed leaves dusted with so-called transformed pollen from a Bt-corn hybrid ate less, grew more slowly and suffered a higher mortality rate, the researchers report. Nearly half of these larvae died, while all of the monarch caterpillars fed leaves dusted with nontransformed corn pollen or fed leaves without corn pollen survived the study Several factors make monarch caterpillars particularly likely to make contact with corn pollen, Losey says. Monarch larvae feed exclusively on milkweed because it provides protection against predators. The plant contains cardenolides, which are toxic, bitter chemicals that the monarch caterpillar incorporates into its body tissues, rendering it unpalatable to predators. Milkweed grows best in "disturbed" habitats, like the edges of cornfields, Losey notes...

The very fact that this pollen is blowing in the wind breeding with plants that aren't gmo and killing non targeted insects kinda creepy in my eyes ... if we decided we don't want this stuff any more were likely to have to go to are seed banks and bust out the seed before the gmo crops were released .

Since the 80's... that far back eh? (F***ING Kids) Hun-- in the 70's, my friends and I were all told that it was OK to run behind the DDT trucks that went through our neighborhood every 2 weeks to spray for mosquitoes. I hated the smell, so I always hid in my room. Guess what? I and 3 others are the only "kids" from that neighborhood (over 30 kids) that are not dead or dying of cancer... I do not think that is a coincidence- since the Government has already admitted to the damage DDT does to the nervouse system, digestive system and reproductive system of ALL birds, mamals and reptiles???
And of those who do not get effects themselves- there are often 2nd-3rd generation effects-- like the sudden rise in Autism in the past 25 years.
They said the same about DES-- a drug to stop miscarriage.. that babies that weren't born severely disfigures, hermaphroditic or dead, later found themselves to be either sterile, or they themselves gave birth to deformed babies.

This after "testing" and saying it was safe or over 20 years....

It's not a coincidence, UNL and Cornell both have published studies on the use of DDT and what it can do.

So Far in this thread ive kinda of been against the GMO Food im going to try and take a step back from that and ask a Question ... So if we could change the DNA of plant to do anything we would like it to do say way ahead distant future .. What would be are over all goal ? what would we call the perfect plant that no longer needs modifying ?

a plant that had a high Y complete protein & amino content that produced more protein per squ. acre than any animal protein... Oh Wait ! That would be HEMP!!!

I have at least one GMO bowl of oat cereal a day, as long as it was modified by Monsanto. I don't trust any one other than them. They shared their seeds with over 250 corps and who knows where that's gonna go, hah.

Advanced GM foods....that's where it's at!
