neighbors peeking at my outdoor grow

What you need to do is "cage" the plants-- and get a privacy fence between you and the neighbor--
legally-(at least in Michigan and Colorado) the plants need to be in "a secure locked area that can not be seen from other homes, businesses, facilities or access roads".

Use traeted 2x4's and chicken wire to build a 'cage" around the grow with a padlocked gate-- only has to be 5ft to be considered "secure"... and by putting up a privacy fence- you eliminate the neighbor issue- if he can see it he can and will report it as a "public nuisance" and the Cops WILL come take your plants and possibly charge you.

IMO- get to know your neighbor better- invite him over for a beer or pizza etc.. if you are 'friendly' with him as opposed as seeming to be what he may perceive as a "threat" he's less likely to narc on you.

But in case he does-- get those security gates up! ;)

In CA, you don't need a fence unless you have kids. Not that it's a bad idea though.

If posted private property with no trespassing, it'd fall under defense of land.. would it not? If not, then am curious how our neighbor has shot someone trespassing on his land while posted and he did didn't even have to pay medical for the one who was on the receiving end.

It's the difference between firing in self defense (What you would reasonably do with a gun.), and firing at anyone that comes on your property (Which would be obviously bad.). At least, that's how it was explained to me.

Is what I am lead to believe as a gun owner myself, but that doesn't seem to be how it went down unless my neighbor clearly lied about it. To be fair, it also wasn't anywhere near a city where the neighbor could be 50ft away, he has close to 90 acres of corn and soybean at least, if not more.

Neighbor has multiple bow spear traps scattered all over his property and was polite enough to give us a warning. That said, he got `em at point blank range with the 12 gauge (am unsure if slug or bird shot, or custom shell) when they were walking down his driveway after he told them to turn around and leave and they didn't.

That's self defense in a lot of states. Now, if they had tripped a booby trap; that may have gone down differently for him.

Not a booby trap. Booby traps don't differentiate between firemen, police men, dog catchers, children or countless others who may legally enter your property. A burglar entered a empty farmhouse and had his knee blown off by a shotgun rigged to the door. The owner, who lived at a neighboring farm he also owned, was charged with reckless endangerment. He was sued by the burglar, lost both farms, and has to pay the burglar lost wages and medical expenses for the rest of his life. Setting a booby trap will get you busted. A cop goes in, the trap kills him, and you're facing capital murder charges.
