If you have nothing to hide, why do you care about government surveillence?

why? 24 years my government has known 100% of everything about me. anytime i went to the hospital it was a military one. now im thinking and working on ways anything i have they dont know about. even to the amount of food i have at one time.

If Martial Law ever goes into effect, the government has already authorized warrant-less search and seizure of all food supplies.

Thank Clinton.

Well, Delta-V, the energy budget. The first Protein Deposit will undoubtedly be Luna. And then the 1st and 2nd Lagrange points are good bets for DNA outposts. We may already have the Luna depot. Why tell us?
-------------
According to Marsden and Ross, "The energy levels of the Sun-Earth L[SUB]1[/SUB] and L[SUB]2[/SUB] points differ from those of the Earth-Moon system by only 50 m/s (as measured by maneuver velocity)."[SUP][9][/SUP]
--------------
And what is delta vee for that Earth-Moon system to or from our planetary surface? That's the biggie (close to 9 km/s), since the reference point for the E_M system is not at the bottom of our potential well. ONCE we have a space habitat, travel becomes cheap, or fast - but to and from our current address it'll stay pricy in terms of delta vee. cn

There is always right now.

There is a living planet that we depend on right now.

There are 7 billion people right now.

There are many problems right now.
This is uselessly vague. Articulate the problems. Draw their shapes and boundaries. Rank them. Show their interrelationships. Suggest ways forward that address both the glory and evil within human nature. Look at this as an engineering problem: task 1 is to say with blueprint sharpness "what is the terrain; what are its relevant qualities, with numbers; what is the proposed construction?" That is my inclination. cn

Yes I agree this is a much better idea than some fantasy about the 29th century and leaving Earth (since by then the earth will clearly be unable to support life).

Why would the Earth be unable to support life, let alone a healthy technical community coexisting with wilderness? We're beginning to become aware of, and make provisions for, keeping the biosphere in which we're embedded alive. This is an instance where I see the basic desirability of teamwork winning. Odd; the shoe's on the other foot this time.

I do think that we can win more and harder when we are not limited to walking on tiptoe and playng nice with our very limited biosphere. But in the meantime, we are learning to tiptoe. The danger of dropping into am introspective decadence (iPod cooler than VentureStar type of thinking) is real, and it could lead us to squandering the amazing but bounded technical leverage cheap fossil energy has given us. It's scary easy to rest on our laurels, and I see the storm clouds on the horizon: we can't sustain the pax Carbonica. cn

This is the thesis of my entire fucking philosophy.

You know Cannabineer, you just offended me.

I'm going to smoke a bowl and find the patience to endure this madness.

We must cooperate to save our planet.

I know you've been shouting the imperative. MY point, the one you're generating a sense of ruffled dignity to ignore, is:
an imperative is not a procedure.
Equally crucial is that an imperative is not a philosophy. It can be the foundation for one, but to dignify it with the term philosophy it must have a blueprint for the construction on that foundation. Screw slogans; let's discuss methods.

I see no gain in simply saying "we must - !"

The step I need to see from anyone who wants change is a program for effecting that change within the conditions provided. No New Soviet Man nonsense.

Well, of course, C3=O in this, is the Earth gravity well. So, all above Zero is when we are out of that. But, an electo-tether of only about 200 miles dragged thru the fields will give the 50m delta vee.

You were taking about the asteroid belt I thought. Plenty of reason to get DNA depot staff, rotating 25 young males and females to the Moon, but which 25 eh? Lottery, Conscripts, Convicts?

Not really my problem, I guess. But, no one will think this is a problem until mankind is sideswiped and then surely it is too late.

Oh my. cn

Turgidson:

Doctor, you mentioned the ration of ten women to each man. Now, wouldn't that necessitate the abandonment of the so called monogamous sexual relationship, I mean, as far as men were concerned?
Strangelove:
Regrettably, yes. But it is, you know, a sacrifice required for the future of the human race. I hasten to add that since each man will be required to do prodigious... service along these lines, the women will have to be selected for their sexual characteristics which will have to be of a highly stimulating nature.

So, slightly back to topic.

The arousal of emotion in ones self, from these counter ideas, is similar to what the Marine Corp calls pain.

Weakness leaving your body. To become pissed off over posts is weakness leaving the mind. It is very good for us.

That wasn't pissed; that was hoots of mirth.

I have no issue with your previous post, except to say it's the beginning of a beginning.

My cavil is that doing it with chemical propulsion is dauntingly expensive.

That said, it might be the only way forward. We'll need an Enemy, be it China or rising sea levels, to focus national and supranational will on the implementation of this damned expensive method, and only then will the shouts to develop the next, better propulsion mode be loud enough.

I haven't given up that hope, but i don't expect to see it in my lifetime. The children's, now ... that's the eternal hope. cn
