yes. those are ready. they are opening and are supposed to be the in the ground now. You dont need anything but good soil. Forget about the cling wrap and plate. Put them about 1/4" into soil and gradually increase light as they sprout.

Should I put them in soil once I get home from work?

No reason to wait any longer. Carefully get them into moist soil and try not to handle too much.

The purpose of the paper towel method is to see if the seeds are viable. I see the tap roots in the pic.

The seeds are alive and you're good to go.

Your paper towel looks way to wet, but you've come this far in paper towel you might as well wait till they sprout in your paper towel. another 24hrs. in dark, warm conditions.
Then you'll get away from having to plant the seed 1/8-1/4" under the soil.
When they sprout, plant tap root down. Top of the seed shell flush with the top of the soil. you want to see the top of the seed shell.
Never touch your seeds, always use a tweezers when you handle them.

You can wait till it sprouts completely out of the seed, while its in the paper towel.Like Topfuel said, bury the root with just the baby leaves out of the soil. You can handle it with your fingers, just wash hands:).This is my preferred method of germination. If it doesn't come out of the seed shell all the way you can carefully pull the shell off.I answered this same question the day before.Google it,you tube has lots of vids on germination.GL

can they go in to soil now though
Seeds are meant to go into soil right off the bat. There is no need to germinate them in a paper towel, they germinate in soil just fine. You dont want to wait for the seed to crack or the tap root to show before you plant them. If anything, just give the seeds a soaking in a cup of water or in moist paper towels overnight to jumpstart the germination process, then plant them.

When in nature they germinate under all sorts of conditions with no one to bury the seed:)I feel like the paper towel method works best because of controlled perfect conditions.I put them in a moist papertowel and put on top of the cable box or near my lights, putting them in dark might be a myth because i just use papertowel and ziploc bag no plates,no dark?:)works for me:)90% germ rate no doubt. If you soil germinate and they don't sprout you've wasted time and effort of the soil and cups or whatever you use.Have you used the jiffy pucks? They work good too.

Paper towels are for impatient people.
All you have to do drop a seed in a cup of water for 24 hours, then stick it 0.5-1cm(1/4-1/8")in the soil and wait. 3 days and your sprout will be sticking its head of the soil. That's it, REALLY. If after 3 days you don't see anything, wait another two days.. Patience comes a long way here.
heating could be applied only by experienced growers, so many people who started growing tried to warm up their babies and ended up in giving them over 90F of temp which killed them.
When waiting for the tap root to show off in paper towel you are risking. that damn seed is so small and fragile comparing to your fingers, if you will break it - game over. And all is for? For seeing progress 24-36 hours before you would see it in a normal way?
Seedlings are willing to live, i'd just drop them, water and add some soft soil and lightly water.

Also do not expose tap root to air and light.
Good luck!

If you put good seeds in soil and provide the right environment, they will germinate and sprout. In nature, the seeds are dropped in the fall and are covered by leaves and other organic material through the fall and winter. When the spring comes, the rain and melting snow along with warmer temps cause the seeds to germinate. \

They really dont germinate under all sorts of conditions, they need a specific environment.

They dont need dark, but keeping them out of direct light prevents them from drying. If the seed cracks in direct light, the fragile tap root can be quickly killed.

I dont see how a paper towel is any easier to control than a little pot of soil. In soil you dont have to worry about damaging the tap root when planting or orienting the seed properly, it does that by itself.

I used to do the paper towel thing and it worked for me. After some experience I realized that the paper towel was just another unnecessary step. Its not necessarily bad, its just unnecessary. It also saves me from having to pick up opened seeds with tweezers and plant them. I have the same success rate with putting them directly in soil, probably a bit better.

I do soak seeds in a cup of room temp water overnight to kick start the process. I dont wait for the seed to crack, just want to introduce water and warmth to start the process. Then into soil it goes.
