Guns don't kill people, gun owners kill people.

I KNOW!!! If all ordinary citizen just put on their Red Helmet, Le Cape Rouge, we could just bottle up this push to pussyify and go wild party and try to run the place. And that is very fair representation of the Anti-Con forces.

Keep them behind the Fence-Con. Get em all bottled up tied by wire! The Constitution rules, but when you elect ass wipes they have to use something to wipe with, I guess. We Red Hats even use kind and gentle cattle wire.

12 dead in Washington. Oh and it's another ar-15. But it's ok it's not like that gun has been used in... Like all the recent shootings. Isn't this the part where the gun people say "if we armed everybody this wouldn't happen"? Yep... Bet there was no guns in a navy hq...

A matter a fact, I do8)

Guns are a part of American culture to many, and they helped lay the ground work for the country many of us love. I don't want to see my 2nd amendment rights be taken away in the name of safety. No matter what we try to do, bad people will always find a weapon to commit crimes and murders. I understand where gun control activist are coming from and I too want to stop events like today's shooting in Washington DC and Sandy Hook; but we need to address the real problem, mental health. We as a country need to start being proactive in getting loved ones, friends, and even strangers the help they need. Not just a script for antidepressants, but actually help them through their hardships. Every mass murder using guns in the recent past all had at least one common denominator; history of mental illness or therapeutic levels of some mood stabilizer/ anti-depressant.

Law abiding citizens rarely kill people and very rarely going on shooting rampages. You can take the guns away, but humans are pretty damn creative, and they'll find a way to continue to take innocent lives. We need to fix the problem, not the side effect. Of course, not every mass murder or murder has a mental illness in a traditional way, many are just evil people that live in their own universe where nothing matters except them and their twisted fantasies. Just my .02.

ALLEGED to be an AR-15, alleged by an anonymous informant who must remain anonymous because he is forbidden from discussing ongoing investigations, and yet he discussed it... just enough to point the finger at a gun, rather than the one holding it.

and no. MOST of the personell in the navy yard are unarmed. once you get past the pickets and the gate guards, most bases in the US (and most overseas too) are LESS armed than the average city streets in in New York.

why?
being subject to the UCMJ rather than the US Code and State Law, every military base prohibits the carrying of arms unless under orders to do so, resulting in a general lack of arms among the populace

further, the fast response of the military police, coupled with their rather vigourous treatment of civvie criminals ensures that your average hood stays away from the base, resulting in the residents feeling safer, and thus being less apt to strap up illegally

and just to put a cherry on top:
because people in the armed services are less likely to be members of street gangs, less likely to wind up in prison, and less likely to be criminals in general, regardless of their "socio economic backgrounds", race or other identity politics categories.

if this chucklehead had gone on a similar rampage in new york, boston or san francisco he would most likely have racked up a much bigger body count or escaped the scene while the cops were still pulling on their britches.

the takeaway is not "evil gun slays 12, including gunman", but rather "ANOTHER nutbar unloads on ANOTHER unarmed military base, killing 11, before finally somebody with a gun pops his top"

officials just confirmed it was an ar-15, and that he took a gun....off a policeman. So with that info, do the gunfags still think giving everyone little bang bangs is substitute for removing AR-15s from nutjobs? This guy already had a firearms offense.

I think we found at least one person for whom your handle (screen name) holds true.

Do any of you know what an AR-15 is? Does it's rate of fire make it significantly more deadly than the average rifle? Does the size of the round enable it to kill more efficiently?

NO!!!!!!

The AR-15, or more specifically the guts of the gun, are just like any other semi-automatic carbine rifle. Pull the trigger once for each shot fired. Being a carbine it is shorter than some other rifles, but there are many carbines out there. It is a very common style of rifle. The actual cartridge fired by the AR-15 is not particularly deadly, being of average to slightly below average size.

The AR-15 is popular, and therefor used a lot in mass shootings, because of how it looks. There are lots of modifications and add-ons you can get for this gun to make it look bad ass, yet by and large they do not make it anymore deadly than your average rifle, carbine or otherwise. Carbine just means it's a bit shorter, which does enable one to hide it slightly easier than a long rifle, but the shot is no more lethal.

Well, it's so black and just soooo scary looking, gee. I would just be horrified to even try to shoot such a beastly thing as that. If and when the shit really hits the fan and people are out stealing, robbing, and killing. I'm gonna hide in the closet with my family, piss myself all over the place, and try to call 911 when my home and family come under attack. I just hope the cops come with their guns and save us all before they find us. Ewww, It's all so scary !!

FBI said it was not an ar-15, witnesses were mistaken. It was a shotgun purchased in Virginia.

Don't base a case on initial information it is almost always wrong. Where are the two other shooters? Oh wait they don't exist.

To me this is just the Fear of Guns. We say AR-15, like we know what we are talking about.

A recent study by Boston University published in the America Journal of Public Health correlates increased gun ownership with increased homicide.

http://ajph.aphapublications.org/doi/abs/10.2105/AJPH.2013.301409?prevSearch=gun+ownership&searchHistoryKey=

Abstract
Objectives. We examined the relationship between levels of household firearm ownership, as measured directly and by a proxy—the percentage of suicides committed with a firearm—and age-adjusted firearm homicide rates at the state level.

Methods. We conducted a negative binomial regression analysis of panel data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Web-Based Injury Statistics Query and Reporting Systems database on gun ownership and firearm homicide rates across all 50 states during 1981 to 2010. We determined fixed effects for year, accounted for clustering within states with generalized estimating equations, and controlled for potential state-level confounders.

Results. Gun ownership was a significant predictor of firearm homicide rates (incidence rate ratio = 1.009; 95% confidence interval = 1.004, 1.014). This model indicated that for each percentage point increase in gun ownership, the firearm homicide rate increased by 0.9%.

Conclusions. We observed a robust correlation between higher levels of gun ownership and higher firearm homicide rates. Although we could not determine causation, we found that states with higher rates of gun ownership had disproportionately large numbers of deaths from firearm-related homicides.

Am J Public Health. Published online ahead of print September 12, 2013
So the study concluded there exists a robust correlation between higher levels of gun ownership and higher firearm homicide rates.

Don't you hate when facts get in the way of your opinion?

The fact is, there is a correlation between more guns and more shootings while bans don't correlate to reduced shootings. These parameters are difficult to reconcile. I think the best role for gov't in this case is to provide free training to registrants and require the training.

I would not suggest bans, I suggest education and I also suggest a more responsible discourse from gun advocates. While bans are not the answer, an increased number of untrained gun owners certainly contributes to the problem. If the training is good and employs veterans, why would anyone refuse to avail themselves of it? I can't imagine why even the most hardline gun nut would complain about such a requirement. I think they would gladly send their kids.
