You can do feeder plants (feed the fish) but they go quick... ya know... energy is not created, only transferred. The fish food is your energy. But, in a for appearance and culinary herbs garden... a mint plant in its own container, feeding the growth down in the tank, is pretty cool.
They will pick at it as they need it. Like, if you quit feeding them, they'll blow through it. If you are feeding them regularly they take it easy on them. So, if I leave town for a week I can know they have something to eat.
Mint is stupid invasive though, so, you want to give it a separate container. Any non-spicey leafy plant that will trail down and not rot away under water will work as a feeder plant. I've always used mint though.
