I could write a page or two about the differences. I have an alpaca pullover and it is amazing but I prefer merino because it's lighter and more comfortable. Alpaca is warmer and cheaper but I prefer silk baselayer and this merino sweater I have is a thing of beauty. I use synthetic fiber socks.
