I put the cages in when I transplant to the flower pots. I transplant from 2/3 gal pot to 5 gal pot, adding a tom cage... then give them 5 days of 18 hrs under hps, then flip 12/12.

I would recommend checking out the PF Tek. It's old school, but it's an easy intro to mycology. I've seen friends play around with kits in the past... rarely with much success. While PF Tek is not the highest yielding method, it is a great way to learn the basics of mycology.
