I'd say your seed wasnt deep enough in the medium for the shell to come off and the way through. Planting too shallow often causes this. I would try to refrain from trying to remove it if you can and wait for it to discard itself. Its very touchy at that stage.

I only shave 1 hour no more than twice and when I go from 11 to 10 they're essentially done anyway or very close to it. Often at 10 hours plants are leaving one by one for the chop as they become ready. I have to say I don't know if it has any effect at all, but its usually around the same time...

Interesting. I shave an hour off my 12/12 timers as it gets closer to the end. My hope is that the reduction in daylight makes the plant think "My season is ending,, time to pack it in".
