My setup was pretty cheap as well. Grandparents gave me the fan, entire 48" light setup was only $20. An since I used eBay, I maybe spent... $30 on the CFLs. And that got me through my entire grow. Oh, and the timer. Can't remember the price, but I got it cheap on eBay as well.

Yeah. I'd stick with the whole gradual thing. Not sure how your timer works, but mine can be set for every 15 minutes. I'd take it as slow as you can, if you have the time, to reduce any shock risk.

You should be good. I have one fatass power strip plugged into my timer, which is almost exactly like your timer. My strip holds 20 items. Just try not to exceed the maximum wattage for the timer. It's probably around 1550w. That's what mine is.
