Yeah Im sure a lot of people do that, its a basic method. The top usually finishes first indoors or outdoors. I know outdoors you can cut your top and let some of the lower growth go several more weeks if weather permits and you can greatly increase your yield by doing so.

Sometimes they are not light proof, you should always check that before you start to grow in it. Its a pretty easy fix.
