I would think Vaseline would not be a good idea as it is a petroleym based lubricant. It could contamintate your pots. I use a top drip recirculating system similar to what you want to set up and don't have any problems. Dish liquid or water based lube would be better.

I alsways use a size smaller than 19mm so the grommets fit very tightly. i also use a little liquid soap so they seat well. When you push your return pipe fitting through the hole use soap as well. Never had one leak on me yet. Good luck on your grow.
