you have to seal the top with the tube coming out of it.. what happends is the yeast feeds off the glucose (sugar) in order to make energy.. it produces the co2 as a byproduct and heat is released.. co2 is heavier than air and so the heat helps push the co2 up the tube and above your plants.. so...
