DiY LEDs - How to Power Them

    CXB 3070's run at 38.5 Vf and 1.9A (typically) 38.5 x 1.9 = 73.15 watts, so the HLG-120H-48A can run a single CXB-3070 with almost 47w to spare. The HLG-185H-48A can power 2 CXB-3070's (parallel) at 73.15w with 39w to spare. I'd be tempted to run the CXB-3070's at 39.5Vf/ 2.175A = 86w, but the...

    Free Form L-Aminoacids +LEDs = WOW!!!

Most of the scientific literature on amino acid uptake by plants (so called organic nitrogen) has identified this to be important in plants in the tundra/taiga where inorganic nitrogen is limiting. I suspect that if inorganic nitrogen is provided in abundance the addition of organic nitrogen...

DiY LEDs - How to Power Them

The Mean Well HLG-XXXH-48A power supplies will power any LED (or array of serial/parallel LEDs) which need 24 ~ 48Vf iin constant current mode; so for the HLG-120H you can dial in any LED in that voltage range up to ~110w and the HLG-185H you can power any LED in that voltage range up to ~167w...

DiY LEDs - How to Power Them

I was using a Vero 29 Decor for the numbers, and as always "lumens are for humans" as plants (and Decor series) have a lot of wavelengths outside the lumen area. The real deal for plants is PAR, but for any given LED PAR is directly proportional to lumens, I believe. For all the modern high...

DiY LEDs - How to Power Them

There are no real reason to under-volt COB LEDs, IME. As an example the Vero 29 run: at 38Vf makes 100Lm/w and dissipates 80w to make -> 7800Lm at 55C at 39.5Vf makes 90Lm/w and dissipates 124w to make -> 11000Lm at 55C So the efficiency (Lm/w) drops by only 10% while the Lm output is up by...

DiY LEDs - How to Power Them

no no no all the dimming circuits in LED PSs are already PWM circuits internally, only requiring a variable resistor to set the PW (or a two other signals in the fancy PSs) The PWM unit I posted can be fed with raw DC voltage from a dumb PS and be used to give pulsed power to a DC motor or DC...

DiY LEDs - How to Power Them

The stock Vf for CXB3590s is 36Vf, I believe, so that's not running them hard at all unless they're allowed to get over 55C. They are rated to a max of 39Vf at 4A (156w) although that would be expected to knock their lifespan down considerably.

DiY LEDs - How to Power Them

A Mean Well HLG-185H-36* would suit this perfectly, best practice is to wire the COBs parallel with small value resistors off the negative side, but many leave the Rs off. *several flavors at Jameco, B type does dimming, A type is most flexible. If you go A all of the following could work...

I'm all for nice RV4 4w metal/carbon pots when they are needed, but the cermet or CP pots are good for noise free use for 100k cycles, check out the inexpensive offerings from BI Technologies / TT Electronics at Mouser. As to PWM there are some pretty attractive units coming from Asia, check...

Its a good idea, most universal input SMPS (Mean Well included) are about 5% more efficient when run at the higher voltages (with loads over 50%) and you can get a bit less heating on a given AC line going from 120-> 240->277VAC

mar2 1200 just didnt cut it.

The Optic Vero 29 is run dead stock, ie the Vero 29s are at their rated 80w, while the (cheap) Mean Well supply they use (NPF-90-42) is being run pretty hard. With a more robust supply you can easily run the Vero 29s at 130-150w each and 4 could run well over 500w. Not with the Optics case/...

DiY LEDs - How to Power Them

As much as I've enjoyed building 555 circuits, the lazy part of me thinks the Mean Well HLN-40H-36A ($29 in stock at Jameco) would do a very good job powering either 2 Vero-10s* or 1 Vero 18* for excellent CRI I'd use the *BXRC-30A1001-B-23 $4.90 **BXRC-35A4001-F-23 $14.12 both in stock at...

The new Mean Well ELG-150-C2100* looks like it might be ideal for the current crop of Vero 29s, limiting them to a safe/conservative 150w and self adjusting in the range of 36-72 Vf. Jameco lists them for $0.23/watt, although NOT is stock. The new (and currently hard to find) Mean Well...
