I second Bill Bryson's book. It's absolutely fantastic. I listened to the whole thing on a 2000km drive and it's fascinating stuff. Reading The Selfish Gene, Climbing Mount Improbable, and The Power of Babel. All are very good books. Although Babel was written before they discovered prairie...
