Two things: 1. Not just anyone can buy an automatic weapon - legally. They can however by a SEMI-Automatic legally if they are able to purchase a firearm. An AR-15 is a semi-automatic. 2. Some gun shows or private sellers do not run background checks, but that may or may not be illegal...
