In seed catalogues there are often photo's of very purple strains. Do these purple shades happen just by growing the plant? Or is there a technique for provoking this outcome..?

I seem to remember reading a thread where growers were discussing dropping the temperature to provoke a PURPLE strain (BuKU or something) to bring out the purple??? Many BuKu growers say their plants had nice, dense buds but didn't turn purple. Is there a technique for causing this...
