$60 for a top of the line bulb is not that bad. The mistake most people make is buying at the grow store where the prices are jacked up like crazy. If I had many lights than I would reconsider but since I just have the one, the cost of the bulbs are not an issue for me.

It all depends on your light source. 1 gallon nursery pots is what you should use. Use something like Roots Organic Green Lite for soil. Don't get Miracle Grow. Try and score some clones or feminized seeds next time so you don't waste time, effort, and money caring for plants you will chuck.
