    Heatsinks for DIY LED lamps

Where do I buy those? Looks way better than my COB! Way fuller and rounder. ;-)

What do I need to test my DIY cob build for output/efficiency?

Look for a loose connection. That fixed my issues.

    Heatsinks for DIY LED lamps

Cost is the only downside(buying more heatsink than required).

True. Not sure what I was thinking.

    Think ive been led astray

I think it's quite funny you are calling out alesh on his math! You obviously haven't read some of his other posts. You don't have a good understanding of math when say there is a limit to grams/watt in a certain area. No one knows the limit of LED efficiency in the future. As the efficiency...

Panasonic Whisper Fans are now speed controllable !!

I've been running a whispergreen for over 5 years that has a built in speed controller, so nothing new here(except it looks like an add-on package rather than built in). Speed control makes a big difference on noise. I run mine at 50cfm these days with my new lights, fan is rated at 130cfm.

CXA3050's Selling at $8.50 USD $10.88 CAD on Newark as I type

And a fanless heatsink is rated at infinity... I also agree with you that active is the way to go in most cases but that is because of cost not redundancy.

CXA3050's Selling at $8.50 USD $10.88 CAD on Newark as I type

Passive is safer than active. An active heatsink requires active cooling to remain within design tolerance, if a fan fails so may all of the cobs on the heatsink if they overheat. A COB cannot magically start producing more heat.

should i flower with both LED's?

    Agreed!!

is a 400w hps too much

The problem with those dimmable HPS ballasts are the efficiency goes way down when you dim them, meaning more heat for the amount of light you get. If you want dimmable go with LEDs(in particular look for fixtures with COBs). I'd go 250W HPS if you don't want to spend money, a 315W CMH if you...

    vaporizers vs bong...

Could you explain why vapes and bongs are going to give you a completely different high? I use a Vapexhale Evo, bong and vaporizer combined into one. Hits as hard or harder than a bong. Doesn't quite give the instantaneous 'high'(definitely wrong word) of combustion by-products but that is very...

    Perpetual discussion

Last run was a phenotype finding run. I had 18 different phenotypes(4 different seed varieties) run under a 250w HPS. Very challenging and not representative of what is possible. I needed to do this to find the right mother. Yield was up to 13.5g / plant but avg was much lower. Still pretty...

    Perpetual discussion

I should also add that I don't think that 16-23 plants under 600w flowered immediately will fill the space. Strain dependent of course, but it wouldn't work for me. I use almost 10x that density. Sounds crazy maybe but I run a very small box(120W of CXB3070s).

    Perpetual discussion

That's what I do. 1st run under LED's, only 1 week in though. I do veg from 0-14 days depending on the strain so that they finish at an 'ideal' height for me. It's perpetual as in I take in a tray every 2 1/2 weeks and add a new one in its place. Why do you think it will be different under...

    ...All Things Vero...

Curious as to why you didn't spread the outer COBs further out to more evenly distribute the light? Might get you closer to that theoretical 800 PPFD.

building A cab for micro SOG

Just went and measured. I have 37" in height. I do a high density SOG, flowering anywhere from right after a clone roots to ~6" depending on the strain. With your height available you could do something similar or a Scrog, even LST to keep your height in check. I'd recommend soft running COB...

building A cab for micro SOG

I have a cabinet with a similar dimension to yours(but much taller with a veg room on top). Do you have a separate cabinet for mothers/cloning? If not are you planning on running seed every time? Just recently upgraded from a 250 HPS to LEDs.

    'Next gen' COBS?

Super expensive and low output per watt. High CRI is great for photography but a plant doesn't care, they just want photons. I think they took a $3 generic cob and priced it at $83.

Chinese LED grow lights - worth it?

Sad thing is the cutsheet you provided shows an efficiency of 15.7%! Efficiency = Pout/Pin (142.7/906.4), this is including driver losses. The led's themselves are around 20% but this would only be an estimate without the Leds LER.

Chinese LED grow lights - worth it?

Don't bother. As someone stated, similar efficiency to CFL. Go HPS if you don't want to spend the money. Go COB if you want reduced heat/increased efficiency.
