Should be fine for what he is doing,keep em close as possible without touching the plants. 48" would be better,and just run the same wide spectrum tubes.

This must get asked 10 times a day here. Yes they work fine,although they are not the best. For only a couple bucks more you can find a mh/hps digital,somthing to consider.

You could get them under some 48" tubes 1" away and they will stop stretching. A little bit of stretching early isn't bad IMO. Tubes work best for seedlings though.

Id run em no lower than 36" till they get a few sets then lower it 18-24" away

I would try to run at least a 250w HID if you can keep temps down. If its at least a 3x3 you could get away with a 400 I bet.Maybe even a 2x3 would be fine.

I ordered a mh/hps kit off ebay,it came with a HPS bulb and I bought the cheapest MH bulb off ebay also. Do these cheap bulbs work? If I wanted to get better ones would the 400 watt mh and HPS bulbs(sylania) from lowes work? Or do I need some special growing type HID. I know they make ones that...

I'm not sure,maybe I missunderstood him cause that kinda doesn't make sense lol. All I know is he talks about using it,but I never see it get used. Always the vented hoods.

My buddy has one of those tubes and doesn't use it,somthing about hot spots and they are the most inefficiant for reflecting light. Trade off is you can run em closer. Anyways FWIW he uses a hood with ducts vented to it,and the tube sits unused.
