12/12 from seed - The beginnings of spek's perpetual grow

Well, I started my new 3-week schedule yesterday, first 8 plants in. On the right are the 8 new clones that went into flower. The rest will be harvested at sporadic dates over the next 1.5 months. In three weeks, the next 8 go in, and a few plants on the left get harvested.

Subbed. What nutes are you using?
Right now, I'm using a 3 part hydro base nutes, and periodically calmag. I'm switching though to either organic Iguana juice bloom, or pH perfect Sensi bloom. I want to go organic, but I haven't decided yet.

what are the benefits of 12/12 from seed?
Don't need a veg area, and don't need to keep swapping lights from 18/6 to 12/12... you're always in flower, and going straight to flower means that you're harvesting sooner (eliminating a vegetative period), also, you can pack in many more plants into flower.

Drawbacks are less yield per plant, but I can pack about 9 times the number of plants in my tent by eliminating a 4 week veg period.

I have 24 plants very comfortably in my 2x4x5' tent under a 400w, and if I wanted to, could get 8 more in there.

so with this setup you plan to harvest every 3 weeks? that sounds like a reasonable amount of time, I mean even if you only pull 2 zips from the 8 small plants that should be more than enough to get you to the next harvest. shit if you don't smoke a whole lot you could make a steady income from that schedule. not that you should or would, just sayin.

I like it.

That is exactly what my lowball expectation is, 2 zips per every three weeks.

My exact schedule is following. Note that I've only got 8 harvests shown, but will continue the cycle forever if I like it :) I don't smoke or vape, my girlfriend does though daily, so 2-3 oz every 21 days is well beyond what I need. I cook 90% of what I harvest.

shit yeah man. throw the ol' lady an ounce for the month and cook the rest and you're happily medicated as well haha. this is gonna be my inspiration for a perpetual setup. gonna look into hempy as well, seems like it works well.

My soil pots grow with more vigor, but using the Coke bottle idea and the trays they sit in, I'm off to the hardware store today and am going to build an ebb and flow system I've been designing using 3/4" PVC with the Coke bottles flipped upside down. The res will sit outside my tent, and the next batch of 8 will grow in there in Hydroton.

I'm already weighing out my options for the new nutrients. I'd like to go organic with Iguana Juice Bloom, but I'm seriously considering Sensi Bloom pH Perfect as well.

I'll create a new thread with the hydro system I'm designing, and link it here if you're interested.

The Claber 8053 drip systems I have running are working well, but I want to try pure hydro along with what I currently have. I think this will work better for my Hydroton buckets than the drip system does, as there will be fresh feed constantly.

yeah I would definitely be interested in seeing that. I don't know much about hydro right now except that everything is much more sensitive, and that you can grow much faster in hydro if you know what you're doing.

hempy appeals to me cause it seems almost like it's a hybrid of soil and hydro. it feels like a good way to get my feet wet so to speak lol.

Yes, Hempy is my only experience with hydro, and it is an absolutely perfect setup to transition and learn. My perpetual is perfect for learning about full hydro, because if I only do a single batch, I'm only losing 8 plants and will just skip a harvest... oh well.

I've done hempy with 100% perlite and 100% clay pellets. I like the clay because it is super easy to clean and re-use (essentially, just shake out the root ball). I *really* like the idea of re-use, and clay pellets are pH neutral as well.

Spek,
i was planning to be doing humpy with perlite... But you are right about being able to reuse the hydroton balls. That is really appealing. I'm going to have to think about that a bit. Thanks mate!

I got my 4 cubic foot bag of hydroton for just under $20. I went in to my local grow shop three times to buy perlite, and they kept being unable to get it in, so the last time I went, they gave me a 6 cubic foot bag of perlite (damn thing barely fit in the car!) for free, and my hydroton half-off because of the inconvenience they feel they caused me :) Feels like I have enough between the two bags to grow a few hundred plants :)

Hey spek

How do you rock the boveda packs, you tape them under the lid or can it be in contact with the herb directly and place in bottom of jar, or middle of jar.

I only hear great things about them.

Well, just before I got them I had drying a couple ounces of few pre-perpetual plants I had running, and I just measured out an ounce per Mason jar (easier for cooking just to grab a couple half-pint jars with an ounce each pre-measured), and just dropped it right in at the side of the jar. The product is in direct contact with the pak, and I've seen no ill effects.

However, it'll be better for me for the cure and long-term storage, because for cooking, I usually have to leave my jars open for 24 hours (or pour it out on a cookie sheet overnight), because I finely grind it up in a coffee grinder, and when it is too wet, it's a pain in the ass to grind prior to de-carbing.

I'm excited for my first production harvest to test them out fully. I like the idea of removing the guess work and the remembering to burp stuff :)
