2014 Secret cup RST's are in, once again the shatters fail

I thought the problem with solvent extracts was not so much the solvent itself but the contaminants that all solvents have and stay behind even if all of the solvent is evaporated. Like heavy metals and other poisons. So I'm surprised to see this.

I'd take low temp, fully purged/dehydrated, honeycomb any day over shatter. I try to talk people out of shatter every time I hear it mentioned. Yes it's possible to make very smooth clean shatter. But, is it being done correctly by the masses of concentrate makers? No, not at all. Incorrect shatter is very easy to make that is why there is so much crappy stuff out there.

I think it's funny as fuck when I go to dispensary, after dispensary and see their shatter people are supplying them with melting in containers at only 70-75F

Looks like Grey Wolf confirmed what I thought... "You can remove pentane and longer chains before extraction by vacuum distilling the butane, using a cold trap under 100F."

The problem here is that while it's entirely possible to make clean shatter with terpenes in small batches, that's not what is actually happening commercially. And I believe it is impossible to make enough clean shatter to satisfy the commercial market in California. Unlike with honeycomb, shatter is extremely difficult to upscale production. The result has been the market flooding with tons of dirty shatter, but since clubs aren't required to adhere to any standards in Cali it goes unnoticed until you get a cup event where they actual test for residuals. This is the second time this has happened. Each time the result has been people blaming the lab for testing it.

If all dispensaries in Cali had an actual enforceable standard you wouldn't see 99% of this shatter that people are buying. Without MASSIVE investments it wouldn't be worth it for concentrated makers to make it. Look at what pink house is doing in Colorado. That's really what you need to make commercial shatter viable.

Until we have that people are better off sticking to honeycomb.

I have been smoking dabs for 6 years and just last year converted to smoking mostly shatter, for the sole reason of smooth/harshness. I always thought wax was just as clean or cleaner than shatter but wax is definitely harsher than shatter IMO. Of course you can have harsh shat but I have found myself reaching for a glob of shatter before wax just so I wont bust a lung. I feel the high varies from wax to shatter even if made with same starting material, and the flavors are way more intense and "better" I guess with wax than shatter! So this post peeks my interest because I just solely committed to smoking shatter for health reasons because I was led to believe shatter was cleaner... lol

Im not nearly as knowledgeable as you all but I always told everyone shatter isnt best they all just like it because its an amber stone
