Ya Cfl's are good way to enter into growing sense it does not cost all that much up front. Ya but you still get some great yield from them...

On another note. I had the privlage to ride horses with a Cajun man from Church Point, let me tell you this guy was by far the greatest horseman I ever seen in my life... To this day I have never seen anybody anywhere ride half as good as that man.. Texas as some great riders but this guy would show them up every time... Plus he fed me rooster gumbo!!!! You guys got going down there!!!

This is totally wrong. Stop spreading misinformation.

True, watts are watts -- however you don't measure light output in watts. You measure in in lumens, lux, or footcandles.

The simple facts is that different light sources have different levels of efficiency.
The energy (wattage) is used by the specific lighting instrument in two ways:
1: light output
2: heat

I less efficient instrument or lamp (like a cfl) will emit less light and more heat than a more efficient HID type light.

A 250w cfl will produce an average of 12,000 lumens, while a 250w HPS will produce around 28,000 lumens. My math says that's more than twice as bright for the same wattage.
yeah, i can't really believe i forgot about lumen efficacy. maybe i should go easy on the ganja

i'm actually concerned for myself now...

yeah but how many lumens are you actually utilizing. how close is your hps to your plants? lumens are lost with distance. just sayin

From my school book "Growing Without The Bollocks"

"Biggest ass light you can afford to buy and run, stick em over some plants as close as safe, well done. You're now a l33t grower."

get a light meter test it urself you can get one @ lowes for $10 cfl wont come close at any distance compared to a hps of the same wattage ! ill put money on tht !

i can keep my hps 6 inches from the top my plants wth no heat problems and at 18 inches im not losing enuff to talk abt i do have and use a light meter !

I use a combo of CFL's and LED's.. Nothing much on the LED side.. Just stuff I built. But I do have a 200w cfl that I use as well. 15,000 lumens.. Well ya duh.. It works. The major difference between HPS and CFL's is the fact that with CFL's you are constantly moving the lights around. More than 4" away? Forget about it. But the results can be the same. If not even better... But CFL's aren't for lazy people. So ya, take your pick
