240w cfl vs 240w hps

Its only a 240w hps so is not too hot. Its about 12 inches away from the canopy. If i put my hand at the canopy top its not hot at all. Some of the leaves are very pale green so maybe there is heat issues. But it is a learning process after all. Thanks for the info/help guys and gals

I disregard all that as nonsense on the basis that I'm not in a position to run a 1000w setup, and all this talk of 1000w of light is making me jealous as fuck. On those grounds I must disregard that as nonsense.

I will backtrack on this opinion when, and only when, I have a 1000w setup of my own :D

well i will chime in as of last few years i noticed CFL growers are doing pretty dam good trying to compare 600 watts of cfl's to a 600 watt hid or 1000 hid is plain crazy a 1000 hid can be 24" away from canopy and still have litterally 100 percent efficiency thats the thing with 1000's it gots a shit load of penetrating power so you don;t need a 1000 to be close to a canopy for it to produce BIG YIELDS secondly you here that you can't get a 1000 close to a canopy again i beg to differ with proper wind movement in a grow room you can place 1000's like 13 - 16" above tops again having them this close isn't going to give you better yields being a 1000 watt hid starts to lose lumen penetrating power @ around 24" from tops and up
and 600's will start losing par around 20" from canopy 600 will faster luminous by every inch further from tops as it goes away

have to agree here,,, but with CFLs now that you can buy them in a 200 watt, and that's a real 200 watt. They are really making head way. here they are..

photo cfls 200 watts.jpg These are 16 inches long and 8 inches wide , for those of you that have not seen them yet... I'm testing them now...

One of my suppliers of bulbs has had 250w CFL's for a long time now. They're standard E40 screw fitting, and puts out around 19,500 lumens. Thats not to be sniffed at.

About £40 each delivered ($63 US) ($63 CAD)

CLF or tubes is a great way to grow some smokeble buds cheap and easy .. but if you have the option of running a HPS I would anyday ..

with that said .. I can see my self down scaling from my 600W HPS to my T5HO tubes one day (just need twise as many "12")
will be mouch more "easy" when it comes to heat .. ventilation .. safety .. power use aso.

and if your ok and expect less yild/dens buds I see it as a good way to provide yourself with smoke ..

and if you did your home work and is ready to use some time (adjusting the light and traning the plants aso.) it possible to grow some nice buds .. even seen Ppl. come close to HPS grows .. but they also had nice T5HO fixtures .. DWG/hydro and knew what they wher doing ..

well just my 2€

I didn't no, I stuck to 125w although they were very tempting. And still are, I suspect at some point in the future I'll utilise those in some way.

There are red spectrum 250w ones as well... I get mine in the UK, but they must be everywhere if you look deeper. See if there are any on eBay for your locality etc.

Sorry about the Jack, but the main page as enough post already, but it still pertains to this discussion.. Ok here it is.. as anybody got a gram per watt using CFLs I think I'm going to get close.. so does anybody know if there is anybody getting gram per watt using nothing but CFLs...

I can't remember his name at Overgrow, but this one brother was a MASTER fluoro gardener and was approaching or made his gpw goal. I know you can get great results flowering with fluoros, but those are folks who have dedicated their growing careers to perfecting that strategy. Think what they could do with a high powered engine....

FTR, I use 6 56 watt 3000 lumen CFLs for my veg room, one per plant, and a 23 watt for cloning. I love them vs. my old tube setup.

Heres a snapshot of some of my 125w CFL's (plus some misc others), no reflector, nothing, I know I know, bad me etc, lol

The main ones here are 125w red spectrum. You can see the difference with the blue spectrum lower ones.

I have a 400w metal halide arriving any day now. I'll still use the 125w reds in each corner correctly though, thats some juicy supplemental lighting for the canopy in a ScrOG. (which is what my next grow will be)

Ya mine are growing now.. 5-5 5-6 4-5 4-4 4-4 5 plants. 5 week veg about but I'm using 800 watts on one side and 800 watts on the other.. and a bunch of supplemental lights on the sides.. These are not equevalent watts that's true watts.. Its only been 10 days in flower so they have just a little stretch to go... But ya there almost tree size... shooting for a gram a watt. But there is about a million things that can go wrong... in the next 8 weeks.. so keeping my fingers crossed...

i ran cfls only for a year then i bought a hps i still have a few cfls on the walls but id never go back to them the extra wiring fixtures hanging everywhere to get the most out of them doesnt make any sense yea you can get good yields from cfls but i prefer 1 hps over a dozen cfls hanging everywhere put a light meter on ur biggest cfl and then put it on an hps of the same wattage theres no comparison !
