SALT LAKE CITY -- Hundreds of California teens on their way to Utah for a ski trip were caught Tuesday with more than just their snow gear. All sorts of drugs were found on their buses - but no one was arrested. In fact the group was allowed to continue on their trip to Utah.
But Elko police say they just don't have the room to hold more than 250 kids on misdemeanor drug charges.
Marijuana, mushrooms, alcohol and pipes are just some of what Elko police confiscated from over 250 California teens looking for a good time in Utah.
"There were five tour buses, full of young people anywhere between the ages of 15 to 20 and they were on their way to SLC for a ski trip," said Chief Don Zumwalt
The unchaperoned ski group stopped in Elko, Nevada for dinner. While parked at a Maverick gas station, patrons of the store noticed some of the teens smoking drugs. Fast forward a half hour or so and dozens of teens are turning over a ridiculous amount of drugs to police.

"We had consent to board the bus and kids brought out loads and loads of contraband on their own and let us take it and destroy it," said Chief Zumwalt.

Elko police say no one teen had enough drugs on him or herself to warrant a felony drug charge. Because Elko's juvenile detention center only holds about 30 kids - it wasn't feasible to arrest and hold everyone on misdemeanor charges.
"We could have stopped and got search warrants, searched every bag, and we would have still be writing search warrants a week later because it takes so much time to do that," Zumwalt said.
So the teens were allowed to continue to Utah for their week long ski trip. That's not the end of the story, however.
Elko police say they're now investigating the bus company, Divine Transportation, and the independent tour group, Summer Winter Action Tours, who put the trip together.
Police say if something like this happens again, not only will the drivers be arrested for endangering teens and transporting drugs across state lines - but the buses will be seized.
"We're going to look into the group and see who sponsors it and see who is responsible for it and then have a little conversation with them, because this happened last year as well," Zumwalt said. Elko police tell us that after last year's bust the parents of some of the teens on that trip sued the bus company, and the company that arranged the trip for negligence.
Divine Transportation did not return any phone calls.

who was the guy who made a thread the other day about fighting "the man" by having stoners getting arrested in masses on purpose just to clog the jail/court system and force the issue to be addressed? he would LOVE this shit.

"this happened last year as well" now THAT'S funny. i guess we should all flood small towns and overwhelm their police. sweet loophole.

edit: why did they confiscate the cough drops? lol

The teens voluntarily handed over their drugs? Not the type of skiiers/snowboarders I'm use to...

Not to condone young people using drugs but they would need a damn good reason to search my backpack before I volunteered my stash over - and a couple old people pointing at 5 buses full of 250 kids saying they saw one or two smoke dope doesn't sound like legitimate probable cause to me...

I like how they are trying to blame the bus driver. lol totally his business to frisk all his young passengers before boarding.

A couple of wingnuts smoked IN a restaurant and ruined it for everyone. There's always at least one assclown in the bunch.

I hope 248 people throw them the best Blanket Party.

looks like a zipper bag.... probably someone was using it for a stash bag. those resealable bags from packaging are way more smell-proof than ziplocs. :)

interesting story...

all the kids had to do was simply not give them their consent... even with a "warrant" no one not even the president has permission to touch or abuse/search another person without their consent ;)

doesnt mean they wont abuse or search them anyways though :(

but fortunately there are penalties under the real LAW not the fraudulent legal system... for such actions against another ;)

the scariest part of this thing is the kids appeared to be scared to assert their rights. either that or they didn't even know what their rights were. that's what a "let the adults do the thinking" culture will get you.

i'm not sure what their local laws are as far as being under school supervision, but the police have to respect the rights of citizens regardless of whose care they're in.

and lol @ the cops threatening to arrest the drivers next time. little town cops are so cute. how in the fuck the parents were able to sue last time is completely beyond me. parents get paid because their kids are potheads? THAT'S a new one...

having "rights" does not make a person innocent.

the KIDS (some as young as 15) stood up and took RESPONSIBILITY for themselves and were rewarded for it

how about we stop and assert our rights? :cuss:

i bet 250 people would have ended up with courts dates. after all, fair is fair. ;)
