300W cobs in a 2x4?

I have a 300w HGL MCOB unit and a 200w older blurple from the same company.

After some home reconfiguration I have a 35"×35" closet available.

I have room for a 24"x48"x72", or a 32"x32"x60" tent.

The light has five x 100w MCOBs that are driven at 60w each.

I have an option to run one @60w, four @240w, or all five MCOBs @300w.

The light could power a 4x4, but the tent will be only be 24" wide.

I am afraid of overlighting the tent, so should I opt for the taller tent?

That light can't cover a 4x4.
300w is fine for a 2x4.

Go for the 2x4x6 tent
Though I'm not sure how that will fit in a 35" x 35" closet??

300 watts is not too much for a 2 x 4 x 6 tent. I am flowering in a 2 x 4 x 5 tent and run ~350 watts (420 watts @ ~85% full power) between 18" and 20" above the canopy.

If you don't have a lot of grows under your belt I would suggest the taller tent. 300W will work nice in a 2x4

I bought the HLG from their office in Vancouver, at the time the owner said that it can cover up to a meter.

The 2×4 will stick out about a foot, this room will still remain private.

Either tent, the bifold doors are coming off the closet.

The 2x4 gives me about a square foot more usable space. and there's room for a vertical salad tower.

Plus I want the extra foot in height. Buckets are taller than pots. My last tent was shorter and even with LST sometimes I wanted more height. I ended up cutting the tent up to convert a closet but it was in a narrow, hard to access hallway.

Perfect, thanks. The MCOBS are super bright compared with other lights I have had. And this is my first go at DWC, so the lst will not be intense.

I have a ~5 years growing clones and autos in soil. Not an expert by any means!

My health didn't allow me to garden for several years, but 3 new joint replacements and I am eager to start again.

I chose the Pink Kush clone for my first hydro because I have grown it before and can focus on the DWC.

MCOB = "Multiple chips on board" When unlit look like 2" yellow squares, but each one has hundreds of fine tuned LEDs in it.

I think the HLG is making mostly quantum boards now. The MCOB were designed for commercial gardens.

Good. The 2x4 has a better frame and much thicker material. It is the one I will get.

In your opinion, would it be overkill to run the 200w blurple next to the 300w MCOB during the 2nd half of bloom? I have the gear, I can manage the heat...

Blurples in there would be a waste of power - and would make things pretty noisy. Use all 5 of the 60 watt MCOBs and space them as even as possible throughout the grow area. That should provide good overall coverage at 37.5 watts per square foot.

While you could manage that excessive heat in the tent, a blurple was only great as a VEG light and, IMO, lacked "the balls" when it came to producing dense flowers. Their colour temps are closer to the 4100K range which is a little high for effective flowering. Closer to 3000K is a better colour temp for blooming. Canopy penetration with a blurple leaves much to be desired whereas COB's do a great job further down the branch.

Since I went the HLG QB and TIMBER COB route a few years ago, my noisy Viparspectra blurples have just been collecting dust.

You can pull ~1 lb. ( there we go RIU. We haven't seen that one in print for a while ... ) out of a 2 x 4. While the grow area is smaller, it's easier to manage 2 or 3 plants in a 2 x 4. Keep cloning and rolling the plants and that tent will keep you in sticky dank for a looooooooooooong time.

Unfortunately they are set in a 20" square with 1 light in each corner and 1 in the center, so I can't spread them out. Excuse the art.



I almost got 4 or 5 Single cobs but the guy wanted $60usd each to ship to BC even though they were $10 each to ship much farther to Alaska or Hawaii. Decided to drive into Vancouver and buy from HGL, plus I could meet the manufacturer and

I made the right choice, $10cad gasoline compared to $300usd shipping, but being able to position them would have been nice. That said, this footprint should be fine.

LOL A pound per tent? Not likely (or necessary) I vape 10-14g buds per month and make medibles, creams and tinctures so 5-8oz each grow meets my medical needs without going over the 4 plant limit.

Of course my son and friends would happily smoke the remainder if I got a pound!

I haven't cut clones before I get them from a friend. I would like to try clo ing after I nail down the dwc basics and dial in the new tent. I have a 2x2x3 drying tent that could be used to start clones in the future. I think I would go with a different strain than the PK and MKU that I have now.

Still, autos gave me a perpetual grow at 20/4 and I like the idea of producing salad at the same time which might not work under 12/12.
