600W Dwc Discrete Cabinet Scrog - 2nd Run

had to raise the light up to maximum today, still just about 18" off the tops of the taller ones. This did wonders for the heat too, seems to take alot longer for it to build up. Vent cycles are running 15+ minutes now, nearly double.

and pond-zyme has bacteria in it.

this might be the only useful thing i ever say on this forum, so take note:

the elbow glass on an arizer vtower vape fits perfectly into a big diameter bong downpipe.
hell yes it does. make a whip with an elbow on each end for teh win!

I purchased a vape-to-bong adapter, best 20 bucks I ever spent. Spray Azamax in your reservoir, it won't hurt your roots. I just dumped 10 gallons of Azamax and water at a rate of 1/tbs a gallon through all of my grow partners plants, which is a good number of plants. She has gnats bad. I came up for a week to save the garden. One thing that sucks about DWC, and it isn't just AN, you have to chase the pH every day. No matter how high or low a nutrient will drift, it still needs to be chased. This is why I switched over too 100% soiless Sunshine Mix #4. So much easier on a small scale.

I guess what gets my goat is that this res is stable during veg, at ppm exceeding 1500. We should be able to stabilize this res during bloom. I really can't see these plants sucking enough water to drop ph by .1 every hour, especially if I'm only adding back well under a half gallon daily.

and no worries on the gnats. there are no more than a couple that have been hanging out literally underneath the res. Probably some spillage or something down there that they are lounging in. Haven't seen them up in the plants or in the coco or anything. They get the death later today.

swear pics incoming.

Solution! Larger res! Can you get a cooler that is any wider, taller, or longer? More water, means less topping off, and hopefully less stuff getting sucked up at once and leaving so much pH buffer behind...

What type of pH buffers are you using? Maybe switching it up could make things different. Earth Juice makes a natural or organic pH up and down, called Natural Up, Natural Down. Perhaps this may work better. I have no idea what makes everyone's pH buffer different, if anything, I looked up what exactly they use to adjust pH normally, and there are only two or three different synthetic choices for gardening applications, whether it was an acid or base buffer. As far as a natural acid for gardening, lemon, lime, or orange, any citrus. Orange supposedly add's a lot of flavor to your buds because of the carbs it has, and because orange juice is flat out delicious. But all that shit I would research first, but I know Earth Juice already has it figured out for you.

....But I'm thinking of using Orange Juice for a carb and acid buffer for my coming outdoor crop, the season is just about perfect. I have a place in the hills at a caregiver's that I can grow a patch of auto-flowering plants outdoors all summer long, and then come July/Aug, I will start planting annual Indica and Sativa plants, but I have never tried the auto-flowering ruderalis, and I am fucking loving the idea of a bunch of plants going practically free dank weed for me outdoors, year around.

My favorite garden store, CalWest Hydroponics located off of Pierce/Magnolia in Riverside off the 91 (can you tell that I highly recommend them??), hooked it up with a free starter pack of BioBizz, Amsterdams' favorite organic liquid fertilizer, which I have been DYING to try, so I am so stoked they hooked it up for free the other week. As well as a bunch of super dicounted and free shit, I fucking love CalWest! It's worth a drive if you got a few bucks saved up.

So yeah, I have free light, free patch of land, free fertilizer, all I need is about 25-40 dollars worth of soil or soiless medium and I can grow practically for free for 9 months out of the year.... Fucking awesome!!

Also, they do make inert pond enzyme. But after bouncing around rollitup I think it might still be a bad idea, it may be low in enzyme type count, and I'm not sure how to check. Apparently Sensi and hygro zyme only have 12 types and are more expensive, while prozyme has 30 types and is cheaper. this is at least how I understand it.

in the flower cab -

dropped ppm to 750 just to see what would happen. so far, ph drop still exactly the same rate. theres no way 750ppm is overdoing it. No.

in the veg cab -

it's root aphids. finally found them but I think too late. all plants are now infested. nothing on the leaves where I azamaxed but the coco is just crawling with them. re-treated foliar style with azamax including a good spray across the top of the coco. will drench treat them next (edit: done). if this treatment doesnt do it for good then i will nuke everything in that cab and start fresh. nothing in there is worth this spreading to the flower cab.

This totally sucks that you have root aphids, but at the same time, I am so glad the bugs weren't from me, I've felt guilty since I first heard about crawlers. I have never even seen a root aphid before. Using Azamax as a drench is by far the most effective form of pest control I've seen so far. Everything starts at the soil, so it makes the most sense to to treat that. And I have used a lot of different insect treatments on one grower's garden in particular, she always has the most insane and vicious fungus gnats, sometimes white flies. White flies are super, super, super easy to get rid of though.

DE is also a fantastic way to deal with soil-born insects, if they ever need to surface to breed, eat, lay eggs, whatever, they will get sliced right the fuck up. My number one favorite cure is Azamax drench, then it is DE, then Azamax foliar spray. Doctor Doom bomb is amazing as well, especially for spider mites.

very busy in the garden this weekend. let's try to recap:

flower chamber -

gnat control underway. no plant damage, no real issues other than need to get these fuckers before it becomes a problem. DE across net pot tops in the morning, also dusted all surfaces below the canopy. about 12 hours later had brewed up a gallon of azamax at max strength for drench and foliar. syringed this down into all the net pots / coco. had a few crawl out like "wtf now?!" so looks like we are hitting this at the right time. i would have dumped the couple of fl oz that the bottle calls for when treating 15 gals hydroponically, but that's fucking expensive and this bottle of azamax was supposed to last forever. We'll see how it does and press the attack if needed. Also got yellow sticky traps down under the canopy.

I am 99.9999997% certain that these gnats came from me hanging out with the door open and light on. Especially when it was hot a few weeks ago and fresh, unfiltered air was being drawn into the room. No more of this now that CO2 and AC are in place.

PH drop is insane as always. I'm going to treat this now as a case of too small a res for 6 plants. Remember, I increased the number of plants going in to see if this problem would get worse. Next run we do no more than 2 plants in here and I bet this becomes much more managable. PH was 5.9 at 5am, 1pm it's 4.2. For now I am just going to upkeep it with ph up as I can. I am seeing a few complaints on the plants that look like they want more food. Thought it was burn but the way the edges are curling a bit (just a hint of this starting) makes me suspect they were much happier on the 1500ppm diet. Since the PH drop hasn't changed one bit on the lower ppm diet, I'm going to bump it back up. Sorry Joz! Will flush it later today.

Half concocting a way to increase the res size for this cycle by adding a 20 gal drum and recirculating it. Mulling it over.

Stopped by a new hyrdo store touting their "vortex tea". Free half gallon with any purchase, so I threw some of that in there. wtf not? Also dumped in the rest of last week's VerimtT. Fuck it!

The hydro store guy thought I could get a handle on this ph drop by using a silicate product to raise the ph. It worked about as well as I figured it would, although this stuff does work surprisingly well as ph up. Dyna-gro pro-tekt silicon solution. I probably dumped 150ml of it in there over the course of a night. Zero difference to the ph. We'll incorporate this into the diet anyway but it's not the solution to ph plummet. Maybe this plus a little azamax treated proactively would help keep critters from getting a good foothold.

Veg cab -

Looks like it has been snowing DE in there. I piled it around everywhere. All over tops of pots, shelves, really trying to hammer the point home. Experimented with dusting leaves with DE. Result - eh. Once it's on the leaf, its on there until you really spray the shit out of it with some fluid. Wiping won't do it, nor will pouring. It has to be pressure washed off, and even then it's 3 or 4 washes. I don't know what the plant thinks about it. If plants can tolerate it, if it doesnt dry out the leaf or something, then it might be effective to dust the hell out of the whole cabinet at lights off and wash it out again just before lights back on. Don't know what it would be worth, but a bellows full of DE blasting recklessly should at least communicate to critters that the environment is becoming more hostile.

Started attempting to repot each clone to check out / get at the inner roots. I do not like the root conditions. Not looking really bad, but what was white is turning brown. No more extended stays in party cups for clone. Too much standing water caused this root brown and likely helped lead to the bugs. From now on everything must drain. Duh yeah I know it sounds kindergarten basic but these plants were doing fantastic in this stupid party cup setup for .. 5 months now? No problems until the last 6 weeks, so as long as they aren't in there for too long it's no problem. Well until the bugs show up anyway.

Got halfway through the cab, will finish today. Was very surprised to see aphids on only one of the plants, a blue dream in a party cup. Saw just two or three, a far cry from the population explosion seen earlier in the day. DE fucked them up I suspect, as I really laid it on thick there. Maybe the DE kept them limited to areas of the coco and roots that had been treated with (and were partially still soaking in) azamax solution.

Each one was pulled out, all of the coco removed (EASY with croutons. Why are croutons not stocked anywhere? Total bullshit that I have to keep special ordering this awesome medium. Waiting 2 weeks now on a bag .. ), then sat into a corona bucket with about 1/3 gallon of max strength azamax. Immersed them to the top of the rockwool for a few minutes and gave them a far too strong spray blasting of the same azamax strength. There is no way that azamax has not penetrated every single nook and cranny of each of these now.

Repotted them into various containers, mostly 1 gallon pots full of the last of my coco croutons (which i checked to be sure they weren't harboring bugs. none found.) or hydroton. wow hydroton is a pain in the ass. I am planning on pulling them back out and possibly repeating the process in a few days, so these aren't any sort of permanent homes. However, they are completely drainable.

Dusted DE around the pots and media as I was potting stuff. Placed pots onto trays, also dusted.

Placed the trays under my new 1000w HPS, in my new grow tent. This is my long term bug solution. Don't let the clones sit around. Flower them, keep the ladies moving rather than sitting in a veg chamber being over pruned, waiting to pick up crawlers.

Will spec more of the tent later, but it's super simple. 4' x 4', 1000w HPS in a yeildmaster II 6" with the usual white cheap magnetic switchable ballast. Nice deal on this setup from gc hydro at $220 with an ad in OC weekly. Must have the ad if you go for this deal. Was about to chomp on the exact same hardware for $225 used.

It came with a $63 sunmaster bulb that I think is complete garbage. Will see what the holdup is, but I can tell you right off the bat that my 600w cab just obliterates the light output of this cheap 1000w. Maybe its partly the reflectivity of my cabinet, but it's no contest whatsoever. The 600w lumatek digital with the lumatek hps bulb is far, far brighter. Will upgrade the 1000w bulb soon and see what's what then.

I modified the airflow as follows: air now enters the 1000w fixture in the tent, exits into the cooltube in the cabinet, then exahusted as usual. So just using the one S&P fan to pull both lights. Working just fine. I have noticed zero temperature difference in the main cab. Will be checking this again when the 1000w bulb is upgraded.

Frozen 2L bottle much > multiple smaller frozen bottles. Dropped in 2l in the AM with res at 72.5. Res 63f in the evening, 65f the next day. Same chamber temp.

Finished repotting the rest of the veg cab. Again, surprisingly few aphids seen. Just two, mightve even been just one moving quickly (running for his fucking life). All got the same treatment as above.

One of the BD plants from last night's repot died overnight. I ran out of medium and meant to leave that one outside of the bright light. Forgot and stuck it in there anyway, basically just a rockwool cube sitting atop a bit of coco. Fried it.

Like a full time job on overtime all weekend .. labor of love.

Why does PH spike up so much after adding a fresh batch of nutrients? Add nutes, ph drops, adjust up, and ph will rise some then drop back down. Why?

Using Potassium Silicate to raise the pH is pretty clever of the hydro guy. It is good stuff even if it doesn't fix the problem. Everything else sounds like you have things handled. I'm not sure on the ventilation of the 1000w tent, are you saying you have that thing is exhausting into the tent, and then sucked out of the tent? Sun Master 600w HPS bulbs are amazing, I'm not sure about the MH, but I've heard great things. Realize that all MH has a lower output than a comparable wattage HPS. I noticed the last Hortilux HPS I bought on discount was much dimmer than a Global Greenhouse Lighting HPS I bought at full price. Hortilux is supposed to be better, I thought it had a lumen output (I've never bothered to double check) but the 3 grow old GGL is brighter than my brand new Hortilux. I personally am over Hortilux, more money for less lux, and that is becoming the case more and more often. I like the Digilux by Discount Hydro, but I hear the Lumatek bulbs are pretty intense.

The repotting sounds pretty extreme, but I'm glad you are getting a hold of the bugs. Fuck bugs.

If lower PPM's are stressing your plants, I suggest you bring it back up. But could it be stress from pH? You know the TechnaFlora Starter Kit is 35 bucks and has no pH problems, and hands AN their ass on a daily basis? The B.Seaweed from Technaflora and Humic Acid is not included, but they are not necessary for an awesome harvest. A humic acid supplement is always suggested, whether it is the one from TechnaFlora or Liquid Karma, or whatever. But I have pulled incredible harvest's without any humic acid. But I feel it gets so much more vigor and flavor from it. I don't know what AN's Humic is called.

Make sure you keep those 1gals wet, unless you soak croutons first, I found that they dry out pretty quick. They dry out pretty quick regardless, so hopefully the container size helps keep them moist.

That was one hell of a post, but the fact that you keep moving forward with everything is awesome, I'm glad you may have saved the SFV OG, they are such amazing plants, you still need to taste it.

I have the Aqua Flakes A&B formula from House & Garden I would gladly hook up for free, but they don't come with any additives, all my additives are in pretty limited supply. House&Garden is the shiiiiit!

i have exhausted all other avenues, at least that i can think of. the ph problem has to be too many plants in the res. Under 15 gallons for 6 plants.. anything over 2 plants in that is bad news. Master DWC guys use 15 gallon res per plant. I'm just going to find a way to roll with it in this grow, then only 1 or 2 plants in the cabinet scrog from now on and we'll see. Bet this doesn't happen next cycle.

The tent itself is currently completely unventilated save for the flap open on the bottom. I just have it rigged so the fan that was powering the cooltube in the cabinet is now pulling air through both the tent and the cab lights rather than just the cab.

Looks like another two plants did not survive the azamax hot tub and shower treatment. They are just wilting as I watch. Two blue dreams and the last of the OG from last cycle. So it goes.

Repotting stuff - the oldest plants in party cups fared the worst, but they did have pretty damn nice root systems down in there.

SFV OG is looking great. 7 of 9 still kicking. So far so good with the bug treatment. Man I want to win. I do not want to spread DE around in the new tent and make a mess but dammit I probably need to.

Veg cabinet completely cleared out now and awaiting extermination and detox. Soon as it's back online we'll take some cuttings of that SFV OG, just in case.

Flushing the main cab now. Haven't decided where I want to peg the ppm to start this time. If no PH hell I'd be at 1660. Will put it somewhere between 1200 and there, in a purely random and arbitrary manner.

Oh and watched a gnat prance around happily in ankle deep DE then fly away with no worries. HRmph.

GOD FUCKING DAMMIT! I'm throwing this laptop in the garbage. I always lose my best advice as soon as I am completely done. And I am also done with fucking Firefox, time for Chrome, way to the future.

Anyways, DE takes time. The prancing was more like marching through glass. They can't reason very well so they will do it for a while before they fly away, that is what makes the DE so effective. They get cut up real bad and then they basically bleed out and dehydrate, and die. So it can take several hours or maybe just a few minutes of him buzzing and walking around before he/she drops. We just try and keep on it so we kill off all breeding counter parts until the egg count halts. DE, unlike pesticides, cannot have a tolerance built up to, because it's like us building a tolerance to bullets and knives. And I don't want anyone giving me any guff about insects adapting at relatively lightning-fast speeds because of how fast they breed. It is also a barrier that prevents other soil-born insects from entering your garden.

Fucking A' I am going to give you a sample of this Face Off too, fucks me up so bad, but makes me paranoid!! I'm so stoned, I can't remember 1/3 of what I originally wrote up.

In the tent SFV OG and a few blue dream. Told you they were big for 3" party cups. Note the pale spots and splotches are DE. Tent light air intake is pictured connected. I have it disconnected now so that air will vent from the tent chamber and exit as light exhaust. Just a temporary measure until I put more into the tent.

IMG_20110409_224754.jpgIMG_20110411_013244.jpgIMG_20110411_013709.jpg IMG_20110411_013633.jpgIMG_20110411_013605.jpgIMG_20110411_013556.jpgIMG_20110411_013623.jpgIMG_20110411_013658.jpg

This was a really, really nice top and FIM job. It did not like azamax hot tub party. Never seen plants die so fast. I'm pretty sure this was due to root stress when I brutalized them for infested coco. The larger plants with larger root mass (more damage from me sorting them out) seemed to take it the worst.

IMG_20110411_013342.jpg

Definitely down for face off. Never heard of it.

The gnats are kinda funny. I wish they were harmless. It's cute to see them crawl up like "what up bitch?!" when you poke at them. They almost never immediately fly away.
Definitely not as many tonight as last night, but they are still around. Dumped some azamax over the pots again after the flush.

Flushed and refilled as follows. Fuck the AN calculator anyway.

14 gallons RO @ 0060ppm and ph 6.2
add 160ml cal/mag, ppm 300
add 50ml pro-tekt silicate
add 140ml liquid karma
add 112ml big bud
add 85ml hygrozyme
add 250ml "vortex tea"
add .75 tsp great white
add 12ml companion
add 200ml each sensi bloom a & b, to ppm 1300
ph 5.9 unadjusted. nice!
add 50ml unsulphured blackstrap molasses
final ppm 1330, 5.9 ph

Also note veg juice is going to have extra hygrozyme in it for awhile to help deal with any leftover fugly rootage.

ph 6.2 and climbing, 1300 ppm, 66f res

Plantmax bulb was burned out this morning. Knew something wasn't right. Bet the replacement is brighter than the 600w?
No hassle on the exchange at gc hydro in long beach, but man that's the last time I buy a bag of vermiT without checking the price first. $17 for a half gallon?!
So tired of hydro shops not being straight up. Going to just start ordering everything online. Trying to establish a relationship is pointless.

Woke up early this morning and couldn't go back to sleep. Always means the plants are asking for help. Sure enough, we lost another 2 blue dreams in the tent overnight and the bulb was freaking out.

finally broke into the tent, swapped in new bulb. definitely much brighter as expected. lost 3 more blue dreams, that's all but one. Like the older plants just said to hell with this shit and gave up.

down to one blue dream now. will sterilize the fluoro cab and put her back in for motherhood, then tent into perpetual flower mode.

gnats better in the main cab.

no sign of crawlers on the others. yet. keeping the spray handy.

Even if you don't see critters, spray every other day. Your garden needs to stay "hell on earth" for any insects that may dare enter. It also keeps survivors from breeding, and helps kill the eggs/larvae.

I'll be out before Friday with some Face Off. Do you want a few Old Skool Kush clones? No donation. It's from the same breeder as the SFV OG, it's Hindu x Afghan, I haven't tried it yet, but Cali Connections is a highly recommended local source, so I put all my faith into them. I also might have a clone from the legend himself, Grubby Cup, so I'll keep you posted on that one.

Cheap zippers piss me the fuck off, but you can always purchase a ZipWall to replace it if it goes south. I fucking love the ZipWall brand zippers, shit stays good forever. It sucks to see your BD dying off, but I have 2 extremely healthy clones coming out of 1 gal pots and going into 4 gal pots, so I will be taking clones as soon as I give them some 18/6 under a Metal Halide. See how they dig that shit. Your flowering BD looks fantastic! Great noding, I do notice a little stress as well, but I can't tell if that is light stress or if that is nutrient stress.

They are much, much happier now back a 1300ppm. 24 hours after getting the ppm back up the leaves are stretching up again, the claw easing off. Much happier for sure.
PH drop started yesterday, brought it back up twice in one day. Today it's pegged right where we want it.

Been really busy in the tent installing a recirculating DWC. Planning on about 8 buckets with about 2.5gal each in them, whatever res i can scrape up (currently a spare cooler holding about 12 gal). Pump out from the res into the buckets, gravity drain from buckets back to res. Intake on each bucket is 3/8, two 1" exhausts on each, and a bubble stone in the bottom. Using the freakin huge 5 gal bucket net pots, which means I need a fucking huge bag of hydroton now. Dont want coir pieces in the lines for this one. No problem using croutons only if I could get ahold of them again. Hydro shop has been unable to get the order in for 2 weeks now. Typical hydro shop duuuhness so far, unless they are waiting for me today in which case i take that back. Mostly.

Two buckets built and running in the tent with veg sauce, same as what they were getting in the veg cab but made in a large batch. Didn't even PH test it or anything, will do that today just to say I did. Bet it would be fine even if I didn't.

http://www.thcfarmer.com/forums/f131/doubleds-med-patient-bucket-diy-mpb-buckets-7883/

This is the inspiration. Take the buckets, put them into individual totes and increase the flow. This has got to be the craziest setup I have ever seen, a great read. Dude pulls 3 - 4.5lbs per plant.

All plants healthy. Gnats not seen anywhere. I used aluminum foil and metal tape to cover all the netpots, should have done this from the start, and I will from now on. It would have prevented this completely without a drop of insecticide anything.

No sign of aphids either. They will get another treatment of azamax tonight or tomorrow, but nothing nearly as intense as the hot tub. Repotting two SFVs into the buckets, it's a wonder they are alive at all. It really killed the roots. The surviving plants are the ones which extended new roots quickly enough.

Really need to spring for a low profile res. Gonna have to be the next upgrade in the tent once the buckets are basically setup.
