Aerogarden going great...Got some good questions though

OK...Setting it in a tray of balanced water sounds like a good idea.
it is, but once your plants are 3 feet tall you won't want to take em out of the res, even if you're physically able to! Plus theres always the risk of droppin em, or fuckin up the roots like you mentioned
Definitely get into siphoning! Its risk-free, and super easy

I don't know about the pH, just play with it.

I don't think it'll do that much harm, but your plants should begin to flower quicker if you leave them on the setting they're at now.

Small and compact is fine. They'll explode when you switch to flower.
when you say switch to flower...are you refering to like a type of nutrient especially for flowering...cause if Ive read everything correctly, the lighting cycle im using now will lead to a gradual flowering of the plants on their own...right?

yea...it works great. thanks again for the suggestion. Ive been told that once I begin to use more and more nutrients, it might be wise to scrub the res. because the nutes will build up and leave deposits that need to be removed....

Question:
Have you ever experienced a gradual lowering or raising in ph in your res. as the week goes by? Every day I test the ph in my res. and each morning, the ph has dropped and I have to bring it up a little. I have to do this every day.

As for siphoning the res, that will be OK for the first few weeks. Once you begin using more and more nutrients, it's a good idea to scrub the res out with a sponge or something suitable. This will get all the deposits stuck to the res out preventing them from causing unseen problems, such as pH fluctuation.
So every morning, I find the ph in my res. has dropped and needs to be raised. I do this every day. They seem to be growing great, so Im guessing as long as I dont let the ph get too low, they should be alright...I am concerned that this ph situation is a sign that something else going on...but I cant think of a variable that would cause this...
Could the plants/roots be causing the ph of the water to fall? Maybe by the gradual removal of nutrients...I dont know?
Nutrient solution that I have sitting for refilling does not experience ph changes. Just the solution being pumped over the plant roots.

I'm not sure why it's dropping. Mine usually rises. Just make sure to check it often to keep it from fluctuating too much, you should be fine.

What do you mean when u say "switch to flower"...do you mean I should start using a different kind of nutrient to promote better flowering?

I missed your post about this earlier, sorry.

"Switching to flower" means you are changing the light cycle to allow the plant to flower.

With the light cycle you are using now, your plants will not flower. They have to be given enough "dark time" to build up a chemical that induces flowering.

How much dark time is necessary for a plant to start flowering?

Alright...thanks to everyone whose been giving me all the good tips and advice.
Got another question:

A few of my bigger plants are really starting to produce tons of growth along the main stem, as opposed to new growth at the top of the plant, particularly from the nodes (<-- I think thats where they're coming from) Like out of each armpit if you can picture that... where a plant would eventually bud...Im getting new leaves and stems there...and also right out of the main stem...lots of 'em though. Is this normal?

I dont see this in most of the pictures I've seen...perhaps its been pruned away...?

new growth ANYWHERE is good, growth ---> budz
all those little side-branches are what'll give you a lot of your weight, as you cant expect the single bit at the top of each plant to do ALL the work, eh?

understandable...They're just growing out of everywhere...covering the whole main stem and popping out of unexpected places...but i hear ya...Im lovin it.

This all started after I added more lights. I hung 2 more cfl's in addition to the aerogrow lamp. Should prolly put in a few more. Right now the lights are from the blue end of the spectrum and right after or immediately before they flower Im gonna change em to the red-end spectrum lights...red for flowering correct?

Im also finding myself want to pump more nutrients into these guys instead of just the half tab aerogrow nutrients.

Yes, red for flowering. 2700K color temp is good one,.

Take your time with the nutes. Don't give them more until you really think they're needing them. Usually, when they start getting a yellow tinge in the new growth is a good point to up the nutes. Start with small incriments to keep from burning them.

also, because the plants grow towards the light, that may account for some of the odd growth - the plant is growing extra branches in areas where it can sense more light

it should droop, but not too much, depends on the temp, if its too cold you'll notice the difference in the drooping
