Am I doing something wrong?

Hello Everyone,

I'm kind of confused? First time grower, doing DWC 5 gallon buckets. Big air pump and big air stone. The Solarstorm 440w LED light system. The last part is where my buddy has gone different he uses a T5 light for veg. I maintain PH balance daily and I've also kept away root rot. He does Not balance daily and has not fully kept root rot away. We are both same clones but 2 week gap from getting transplanted in a thriving environment (taken from clones).

Now his are super tall!!! And do expand out a ways. But very thin foliage(not due to pruning), his roots look like death and very small. Now my plants are SUPER DENSE I feel like I have to prune every couple days because it's so thick. My root structure is massive in comparison to his and nice and white and clean. He's telling me my light is the problem(has veg and bloom modes). But is he really ahead with the tiny root structure and excessive vertical mass?

Cliffnotes:

Veg going into bloom, would you rather have short and super thick foliage 14 and 13 inches tall(wider though) white root growth, or freaking 3 feet tall but sparse foliage just very lengthy and roots that have some obvious bacteria growth and about 1/4 the size of the short ones.

Your doing fine... Your healthy and once you flip, she's going to double in height. His is leggy and ill from the sounds of it. What Strain are you growing?

Or his might be a male.

All my reading says mine seem very happy, but I'm the noob he has experience but dosnt research. They are the same clones so his definetly aren't males. He does usually get atleast 10-12 oz a plant. Maybe if I include some
Pics you guys could give me a idea of what I might be able to get. The strain is just the old school cheese. I was gonna start flowering now, too soon?

I recognize I've been running too nitrogen heavy. And maybe pruning too much. But they just get so freaking thick so fast.

I should also add the one on the right was a runt that was thought to be dead. But all clones same mother mine and his.

Sorry this is all coming to me at later points lol, but they were put into their new home 4/16. So veg for about a month and two weeks.

take a pic when they haven't been sprayed with something, they look pretty good overall. they show strong signs of overfeeding, but some of that may be reaction to the azamax. from what you said above, i'd cut back slightly on the
N, and maybe move your light a little closer if you can. otherwise, forget your friend and what hes doing.

No id like to pretend the aza treatment made it look like strong signs of feeding. But I did correctly identify that about 5 days ago gave them fresh water and have been doing very low nutrient since. I was getting tip curling down and burning. The one on the right got hit much worse.

At that size would it be safe to start the flower and expect atleast 8 out of the big one? They will each get their own solarstorm 440

i like to veg to 18-24 inches before i flip, but thats a personal preference. they look like they could take it now, if you feel like its time.

Well I'm just doing personal. And paying for the setup and still buying it sucks. So I wanna make sure I get enough to last until next harvest. Being my first round I'm having a hard time knowing what I'll end up with based on my current vegetative size.

I was gonna start but after seeing his so tall I'm thinking maybe I need to wait if I wanna see 8 out of the big one.

depends on a lot of things. the bigger you let them get before you flip, the more you'll get. the more light you have (up to a certain point) the more you'll get, use a bigger pot, you'll get more, you have to have decent genetics to start with, feed them good, don't ever stress them....its all really common sense, if you aren't getting what you want out of it, look at the factors involved, find the one(s) limiting the rest.

i find that sativa heavy strains will at least double in size, indicas may gain half their height, and with mixed strains you kind of have to play it by ear, but if they're short and squat during veg, don't expect them to shoot through the roof during stretch

Alright sounds like I should stop pruning as much continue with the lowered N and give them more time if I want to get a decent yield. As they are only 14 and 13 inches tall.

If you can keep your RH around 50-60% the plant wont take in as much water and will bring in less nuts. Just something to keep in mind.when you see over feeding issues. It's not always to high PPM's which can burn your roots.
BTW do you know what your PPM's are?
