after high school 5 years ago i worked countless deadend jobs doing restaurant, landscaping and insulating...now im at a steel factory making 24 an hour, and for my xmas meeting my boss comes in and says good job guys we survived another year..a few steel companies went bankrupt around us but we are still here. needless to say the manufacturing industry in canada is taking a nose dive. my buddy has a mortgage and a car and the whole white picket fence thing at 23 but i talked to him a week ago and he says it was a mistake and the bills just keep piling and piling up because he wasnt secured before he made any of these purchases. best thing to do in my opinion is with the economy the way is it, go to school and hope it gets better over the next few years which isn't likely to happen, and if u made the choice not to go to college university depending on what field you go into, find an apprentiship, after hearing my boss's speech the other day gave me a really dim look at the future of the company i work for, so im prolly going to be looking into heavy equipment operator or dumptruck licence, since the countries broke..but everywhere u look there is construction going on, find you path and what works for you and wether its blue collar or white collar and keep an eye out for every job u can find posted on the computer, newpaper ect. even if you don't think your qualified still apply, whats the worst that they can say? ur not qualified, whoopy shit ive heard that about 30 times in the last 5 years ive been out of school

Dudes where I work are getting paid $12/hr in the PANTRY (basically making salads) and that's starting salary. A good grill cook, which I imagine you are if you've been doing it for 7 years, should make at least $13 (non-union) to start. Someone like you should be making somewhere around $16-18/hr. minimum. You boss is fucking you in the ass with no reach-around mind you... Tell your bass that if you don't get a raise next year, you'll be taking your 7 years experience (which is worth a lot in the FOB industry) and be moving on.
This is assuming of course that by grill you don't mean the grill at McDonald's or any other chain shittery like Panda Express or Baja Fresh or whatever...

I live on welfare at 26.Its not bad here in fact its almost the same amount if not the same amount as the minimum wage.I live in my own place ,have money for groceries and beer ,so pretty happy .So with this in mind, i refuse to take a shitty dead end job flipping burgers or something ,making some asshole rich ,while he refuses to pay me anything more that the legal minimum, when i dont have to.I am doing a distance learning degree though ,so in a few years ,i can get out of this rut and into a respectable job with good money.Until then though ,i'm happy enough .

Don't know if its the "best" way, but this is definitely a "good" way to earn a paycheck AND get solid vocational training on someone else's dime at the very least. Its also not a bad way to network.
One problem here is that the military is currently undergoing a contraction. Used to be the USAF would take pretty much anyone who walked in the door with a clean record. . .not so much anymore. . .they turn plenty of potential recruits away, and with the current recession there is more interest in signing up than in the past.
I should of joined the service back in 1977. 35 years ago, back then a few older grown up friends where trying to get me into the reserves full time,but enjoyed the party life, ended up working construction, beat the shit out of me after over 30 years, i know a equipment operator about the same age, back is so fu ked up from the equip. Stay out of the construction trade, long run, no good. Should of did 25 years in the reserves and retired in 2003. Then work the private sector, instead I'm on ssd, barely stand upright at 56 years old. My advise, go to night school and get into the medical field, even male nurses make great money with all the ot you want. Have a friend, works just Friday, and Saturday, double shift into Sunday, sometimes more. Sacrafices the weekends, but the money and all week off is worth it, he saids, outlook in the medical field, Great. Look into nite classes!!!

I'm actually a program co-ordinator for a large snow based sports company. I'm bi-lingual French/English so I spend a lot of time abroad working with the Swiss/France branch.
In theory it sounds cool, and when I was younger it was. Nowadays it's tough to keep up, hard to date, easy to fuck and catch all kinds of STI's though too. Hours are long and time away from home for years can be tough. Always an adventure though, can't say I'm ever bored

I am wanting to become an insurance agent producer for a big company in the NW start pay is 50k. My older brother works their and he makes over 110k a year with no school education and is 28 years old owns 2 houses, boat, very nice cars and travels the world a lot. He has been with this company for only 4 years and the bonuses are insane! If that don't work out for me, I am getting into the navy to work on a bachelors degree for I dunno what maybe something medical or mechanical.

Hello RIU! I am a 29yr old male that has been unemployed for almost a year now. Prior to my unemployment I was a Automotive Technician for Toyota/Lexus/Scion. I have been laid-off due to the turn in the economy. I fight the same battles everyday as the common American. I have rent to pay, car payments, insurances, bills and more bills. I am a simple stoner that doesn't drink alcohol and enjoys staying to myself and family.
I live next door to a fine example of piece of shit Americans that use and abuse the system for the simple fact that its gainful. They live completely scotch free off the system. From the light bill to the food tab and free cell phones, its all handed to them for free via social services. Then when they are hard up for beer money they do odd jobs on the side like a true fraudster. The best part is the tax time kick that the Government gives them for having kids.
They give them 1,000's of dollars for having kids each and every year. They fraud their "earned income eligibility". She will work for two weeks just to get the credits needed. They have a huge TV, ATV's, Snowmobiles, and even a pair of 2004 Z71 Offroad Chevy. All thanks to the Government.
Oddly enough, they always have money for beer and pot. GO FIGURE! Wouldn't YOU?????? I earned a flat rate as a technician. Usually in the 18-21$ a hr range, and I couldn't afford even a gram of pot everyday. Yet they are totally trashed every single day of the year, without missing a beat. ( Wonderful example for their 10 and 9 year old boys )
Yet they believe that society and the Government DOESN'T give a SHIT about them?????
I believe that this society, and this planet, will never owe me a forsaken thing!!! What I have, I have earned on my own. In fact, every day that I remain unemployed, is a constant reminder, that this life owes me nothing!!!
I think if ppl were able to start living by those realities, this Country would be a hell of a lot better off, and not loaded to the gills with unfocused, unmotivated and uneducated, members of society, that pray on the kindness of a society that has earned its keeps in the game of life!

I was an IT analyst for a hospital, I just got laid off on xmas day. It didn't pay 'good' but it paid the rent and gave me a lil extra to spend every month.
I'm only 28, I got 6 months left till I get my bachelors in information systems....I'm hoping to do software programming or business analysis when I finish...But i'll have to see what the job market looks like at that time.

Good Luck Spittin! Just looking for gainful employment has turned into a 9-5. It's all I can do is direct my efforts to finding something worth my time and effort. Me losing my job taught me a invaluable lesson.
I was blindsided by my lay-off. It never phased me in all my years there that this ride can be over in a blink. If it wasn't for unemployment insurance I would be a dead man floating.
I have applied to over 320 business within a 200 mile radius of my home, and I have only had calls from low-ballers looking to get a OEM trained Technician with years of exp for a lousy 10 bucks or less an hour without benefits.
In my life, I couldn't live under a rock for 10 bucks an hour. I refuse to change my career as its my passion. I don't believe its work when you really love what you do.
Sadly, I am looking into changing course to broaden my employability. I hate to say it, but FORD is looking very promising. They are selling vehicles in a very tuff economy. Thats the whole point and idea to ford...always has been...to make affordable vehicles for the common man. I personally think their engineering is laughable but that's irrelevant to my need for income

Its a tuff career for Automotive Technicians. Most are trained on a specific manufacturer and thus have no interchange abilities. All Auto makers have tuff times, and they almost always take those times out on the one's that made them the millions before having to take a cut on their millions and billions of income.
For example...Toyota Motor's CEO...Made 41 Million dollars last year.......and I'm sure the puke earned every bit of it.
I also have to work on the fact that I would be coming to terms with working for Ford. But at least its not Diamler Chrysler

I'm mid-twenties. Wife, kid, good job. I make great pay for my area (geo-area), but not so great for my industry (due to being in a shit area). I make around 65k/yr. I got expelled from high school, came back and didn't give a fuck, so I barely passed. Went to college for a few years until it dawned on me that their programs for what I wanted to do was archaic. I'm pretty much completely self-taught. Not to sound like an old fart, but hard work and perseverance go a LONG way.
I also do consulting work on the side, I don't do much because it cuts into my family time, so when I do it, I make damn sure it's worth it. I typically charge anywhere from $100/hr-$300/hr. I've also given day rates before, usually for the bigger jobs that pay better (e.g. $2000/day-$3500/day)
