I'll say this: out of the kids i went to high schol with (late 20s)- only a couple are making enough money to truly "live the dream"... these are people with advanced degrees who are either in ridiculous student loan debt or come from direct wealth or wealth through inheritance and who have little taste for fancy things and a stomach for the same cheap food over and over.

I think we can agree that the dream is measured by the money left over each month on top of a mortgage, bills, food, car/lease, bf/gf/wives/husbands/pets, two vacations a year.

Where I went to college, your average studio runs 900 to 1300 a month... your 1-bedroom apartments are 1250 to 1900. Wherever that's the case, poverty will exist and the gap will grow exponentially. When I broke up with my girl at the time, my full-time 19 an hour job was barely enough to share a condo with a bunch of 30 something children.

The economy will improve, ebb flow, crash, improve, etc... until the end of civilization... one thing that hasn't changed is the growing gap between the middle (now the lower) and upper class.

I am 23. I moved myself out to Los Angeles from Connecticut when I was 19. I have always been very tech savvy and taught myself graphic and web design at the age of 14. I went to college for a couple years while I worked three jobs to save up and move west. I moved west. Got a job initially working for a web design company and I did a lot of celebrity websites over the next couple years which was great on my résumé. I am starting to get a lot more freelance work by word of mouth now and I currently work for a marketing company. I am starting my own businesses on the side using my skills from work and I take marketing classes through work now for free which is cool.

I do well enough for a nice apartment, lots of good buds, nice clothes, expensive hobbies (shooting, weed, cars, girlfriend) while still going out on the weekends and traveling to Hawaii and the east coast often to visit my girls family and my own.

All in all I am happy I bustedmy ass and moved across the country. It's a lot more about your experience and who you know out here than back east. I bust my ass working 12 hours a day and in return I have everything I want and need. I love my life my job and my girl. Wouldn't change a thing other than continue being more successful each year.

I'm 23 my girls 22. Between the two of us we own 3 cars outright. I rent a house and pay all my bills on time without any type of assistance. I'm a mechanic at a prominent shop in my area. I've recently embarked on the personal growing experience to be able to save more money.
