Except you're wrong and don't know shit. The surface does in fact only need to reach 32f in order to freeze. So really all you did was derail and obfuscate. Look up the phenomena called Grease Ice. Learn something. Go and actually learn how the ocean surface freezes before starting a big stupid petty debate with someone who actually works in the field of oceanography.

I'd like to see this steaming water at 30 below. Did you stick a thermometer in it? Did you go for a swim? Even if the air was 30 below for weeks, it doesn't mean the surface of the water is 30 below. Not if there's a current of warm water. The ocean is where most of the heat goes.
The entire argument is in regards to how there can be such a huge gain of ice in one season. It can only happen if an extraordinary amount of thawing had previously occurred. So much so that multiyear ice is gone. What is keeping the surface of the water above freezing? Why does it seem like the entire ice cap is returning in a single season?
That's exactly my point, the heat has risen catastrophically.

They're pretty firm on 28.4F. Once the water is frozen, the salt starts to separate- a process that takes quite some time- the resultant freshwater ice will remain frozen at 32F.
As for the rest of your argument about how you can only have a record high rate of ocean freezing if you start with a record large area of open water, I agree completely.
Yet the simple truth isn't enough to convince the Cult of Trump, no matter how obvious. So what is? I don't have an answer for that one, and that's a serious problem in itself; no civilisation can long survive the denial of physical reality.

Yeah, I have had several types of bottled water do that. Once in my throat. It was frightening very briefly but it just turned to slush in a second and gave me an ice cream headache.

So salt just extracts itself from ice and the frozen saltwater becomes frozen fresh water without melting first? Or does Bernie Sanders lick all the salt off and then cry about how Hillary cheated?
