From what I have read they live exclusively on ants so they can't really be kept as pets.
They're not something that is typically bred in captivity, so the ones that do appear in the pet trade are wild-caught specimens. Any time you take a reptile out of nature there's a very real chance that you won't ever get it to eat. They live off a certain kind of ant and it's probably pretty hard to get them interested in something other than what they'd find in their region. There used to be people online who sold the specific ants the desert horned lizards typically eat.

My leadman, interesting guy, did blacksmithing on the side along with being an outstanding machinist ,manual or CNC. He says look at this and he's got a video of him sitting on his porch. He makes a chirping sound and this big ass lizard comes running out of the desert hops into his lap and is eating mealworms right out of his hand.
Well I've got lizards in my yard. I see them watching me I'm thinking hmm maybe I can do the same thing.
Wife says no FUCKING way are we buying mealworms for the lizards. Man life is so unfair.

I did that with wild birds we had feeders up and a tree and I stood there for a few minutes with some bird seed in my hand and little guy perched on my finger an fed. Finch or something similar in size. Was surprised wish I had pic.
