Bluelab ph pen dries out...

75 bucks and Bullet proof. I've owned almost all of them.
Thats a great meter. A buddy swears by those. Check out the new Hanna Groline. Its got new features and stuff the others dont have. I might pull the trigger on one. My Bluelab Combo has been faithful through the years but I can relegate that to my veg room tanks and the new Groline for my flower room reservoirs.

It contaminates and expires alot quicker than you think.
Anything can get contaminated if you don't keep it clean or are cheap enough to put back some you've used but it doesn't expire for ages. It's just inorganic salts that have been stable for millions of years before it got mixed with water and put in a jug. The ones I bought with the pen 6 years ago are just fine and I would use them with confidence today if I were to need my pH pen for anything.

Organics have a short shelf life but not inorganic minerals.

Do your bottles of 4 and 7 calibration have an expiration date on the bottles?

I just checked the Bluelabs calibration solution I have and there isn't an expiration date on the bottles. They are 250 ml bottles, only cost about ten dollars for both 4 and 7 percent solutions, and will last at least a year calibrating the probe a few times a month and discarding the used solution. It's pretty inexpensive and takes minimal time to calibrate and properly store your test equipment. If you're growing in coco or hydro ph is one of the most important things to maintain.

I think the solution will be viable for at least a year so buying small quantities that you don't need to worry about expiring is inexpensive.

One thing to note is that the solutions work at different temperatures.
For instance, for the 7% solution to be 7% the temperature needs to be 86 degrees f or 30 degrees c. Fortunately there is a chart on the bottle with the ph for any given temperature so it's easy to figure out. Besides the results are within .1 between 32 and 206 degrees f so temperature doesn't have that much impact on the results.

I managed to get 2 bottles of buffer for €20 which is ok.
Soaked the pen in a homemade KCI solution for 24 hours. It read the buffer solution perfectly only the 4 was a few 0.1s out. But ive just been testing with tap water and the performance sucks. It creeps up 0.1 every 40 seconds or so, ive had to restart it 3 times and finally after 10 minutes or so it has stabilised at 7.2.
Yet it reads the buffer solution within 10 - 15 seconds.
Whats going on?

Welcome to the wonky world of pH meters. Could be ANYTHING causing it to act funky too. Been there..done that. I suggest getting some bromothymol blue drops for backup or as a reference when you just know the meter is not acting right. Good Luck!!! Its also why I buy replaceable electrode junction meters/probes. Ive been up down...and all around with pH meters over the years. And its not specific brands either...from Hanna...Oakton...Bluelab to Millwaukee..THEY ALL CAN ACT WIERD!!! Pain in thee Ass!!! I also suggest that once you find one that behaves somewhat..to keep it clean and calibrated and stick with that one as long as you can. I use mine regularly. And I can tell you..even if you take care of it..if you use it regularly..your meter will go down. It will not last. You will be replacing it eventually.

I think the blue lad meter sucks! I bought one for a friend. To be fair he is a lazy fucker and doesn’t look after anything properly so wasn’t using the storage solution. When I checked the calibration out it was like 1.2 out after a couple of months. I’ve had the cheaper pens last more than a year and I’ve abused them and their still never more than .1 or .2 out. It’s a pain in the arse to keep the thing maintained when you can get one half the price, not have to mess around with storage solutions and still get an accurate reading.

Hiya
As title says, i got a Bluelab ph pen, and despite clear intructions to keep the probe wet Ive let it dry out. Is it farked?
Cheers!
mine dried out 1 time, I put it back into tap water and after 24hr soak it twas AOK.
btw, on a side note I read somewhere not to use RO for storage

Stop what you are doing, start reading... a lot.

Stop wasting money.

Anyone who wants to drop the dime on Bluelab equipment but doesnt know what storage solution is, should not be growing anything yet.

If you wanna do it, take it seriously. If you just wanna burn cash, theres more fun ways....

I know I sound like a dick, but... this storage solution comes in sample packets with the pen and monitors. Its sold alongside the Ph calibration solutions... (And yes, you need at least the 4 and 7, and having all 3 dont hurt)

If you wanna do it cheap, just get drops or a cheap ass Ph pen.... Bluelab is not cheap, and breaking it because you didnt read the paperwork that came in the box....... why bother at all?

Do it right, or hire someone to do it right for you. Dont spend a couple grand and 12-18 months for a couple ounces of fluffy buds....

Slamming a company because of your own mistakes.. Makes no sense. It's like buying a new car and not being aware it needs regular maintenance. You seize an engine and then blame the motor company.. lol funny.
If you referring to my post. Just saying you can save time having to maintain an experience and sensitive peice of equipment that is fucked as soon as you make a little mistake with like forgetting to put it in the storage solution. Which is a pretty easy mistake to make btw when your in a rush when you can get pens for half the price which are just as accurate and are not going to break or be 1.2 out after you forget to put it in the storage solution. I’m not slamming the company atall have I said anything about bluelab? No I referred to one of there products! I have one of their EC meters which is great and has been going strong for theirs but from my experience with their PH pen it’s an expensive waste of money.

If a person can't take care of a sensitive instrument like a pH pen then they should stick with paper strips or pool test kits.

Some peoples toolboxes are just full of different sized hammers but they won't be working on my car. ;)

No I geezer people can’t some people can be bothered or have the time to be fucking around with the pen when you can get something for half the price, that does the same thing and and doesn’t need maintaining constantly. Have a nice day dude

ANY pH pen needs the same maintenance to keep working properly no matter what brand it is or how much it didn't cost.

Stick to test strips as that's obviously as complex a task as you can handle. Kids shouldn't play with big boy toys.

The one I got from my hydro store for £40 doesn’t need fuckall maintenance you fucking retard. Maybe recallibrating every 2 months if that. Jog on you little prick

My guess is cottee's pH pen is as accurate as his response's.
Can you actually read or are you a retard. It was my friends Pen that never worked not mine. Mines a cheap pen. It’s works perfectly fine. Read a post properly before you make an ‘accurate response’
