call bank ahead of time to make withdrawal?

Ok so...in my past recent weeks/months everything about my life has changed. I wouldn't say I'm living the ideal life right now in a north dakota oilfield man camp, but I've never made $2500/wk before this. It was always 9-10 bucks/hour, 12 at most.

so my bank account never had much of anything beyond $500-1,000 bucks at a time

Yesterday I went to the branch of my bank where i opened the account and requested a $5,000 withdrawal... $2,200 to pay my father for the car he bought me last summer when i was broke and bummy but first I wanted to stop by the coin shop with some "bait" to get him interested in offering me a low bulk-rate premium on silver bullion or coins. Anyway, I was a bit shocked at how startled the bank teller sounded and even said I should call ahead before making a withdrawal of that amount in the future.

Seriously? This is the USA...our currency has been in steep decline for some time. $5,000 is a lot of hard-earned money to me, but in this day and age it's really only a few months basic living expenses

My response would have been "Well, I can call ahead next time, or you can just close my account out and I can go somewhere else from now on, your choice."

Did they give you the money when you asked for it? I'd be furious if a bank tried to stand between me and my money. A decent part of why I don't use them

I think it depends on the bank. I was going through a credit union and I had to give advance warning for anything over 3 grand but I didn't have to on another account through a regular bank.

I could write a check for anything over that amount if I was buying something, it was just the cash withdrawal.

Does anyone remember that old man on the East Coast that put 1/3 to 1/2 his pay into change for most of his life? He put the change into jars and then he had to put it into 55-gal drums, he did put some folding money in but he always buried that in the middle of the drums. He did that for the better part of 50+ years.

When it came time for him to cash it in it took a semi-tractor and and hi-lo. The IRS and the bank asked him to prove that he earned it. He had something like 20 witnesses that had watch him and his garage for many, many years.

The local news asked him why he didn't use a bank? He's reply because they were thieves and he really didn't have to worry about anyone stealing it, because he and his neighbors would see and hear a semi-tractor and the hi-lo required to steal it. lol.

He did say from time to time kids would break in and take some but it didn't account for much.

I don't know whether this much CASH would be problem in a large city, but, cash is at a premium these days. And by call ahead, I think they mean a few days ahead, so they can get it.

i'm a roughneck for a company that does roustabout work drilling rat holes. We drill about 2,100 feet, lay casing and then a big rig comes in to cement the casing, drill & frac. I've never heard of an "iron roughneck", what are his duties? My crew is composed of newer and older, more experienced guys, but we're ALL learning all aspects of our job. Makes the crew much more efficient and functional

nd has had a very mild winter...nothing below -15 (that includes windchill) on night shifts so far...compare that with last years -60 temperatures and 200+ inches of snow! Caused a 5-day power outtage which is NO JOKE in the land of nothing but open plains as far as the eye can see and trailers surrounding a small, desolate town. absolutely BOOMING part of the country though

Wonder Woman- i see what you mean about being frustrated for being questioned, about wanting YOUR money at the bank. It caused a sort of uneasiness, but at the same time, I might feel uneasy if they just gave me the cash without identifying myself. Either way...if I show up with my ID and your employees REMEMBER me throughout the years, then I don't need any questions or comments about my personal withdrawals. $5k is 2 weeks of work (pre-taxed) (192 hours). all this expansion/contraction of our money supply within the digital world and through fractional reserve lending (credit) fucks shit up! And yet the reason we're told we have a federal reserve (by the people FROM the federal reserve)...is to prevent a run on the banks?! shut the fuck up with that bullshit!

Bud, I have absolutely no problem with having to give ID. I just don't want them asking me why I'm withdrawing the cash and nosing around my business (life) because I want MY money, that's all.

I got about half in 20's

not a big deal. but $500 in 20's is about the same size stack as a $5,000 band of hundreds. the envelope they gave me was like, exploding lol

I have a good 'relationship' with my small town bank. When traveling and need money or need to transfer from a distance I just call and they know my voice. But, I hate, I mean I hate it when they have to ask me about my business.

When they give me my change with big bills, $50 on up, I stand there and look for the hologram on each bill. It just drives them crazy, but I have caught a couple of counterfeits.
