cant seem to get started :(

hi all, i am pretty new to RIU and am needing some help with my first grow from seed.

i bought some Big Buddha Bubble Cheese feminized seeds.

i then planted these seeds around half an inch deep directly into the medium in 1litre propagators.

i ph'd some tap water to around 5.9 and dampened the medium.

the medium is coco.

they were left in the grow room and out of 5, 4 were sprouted within 4 days.

it has now been 12 days since sprouting and they have made little to no progress.

the room is constructed within a loft in the uk. it is constructed from mylar.

it has no fresh air intake but is pieced together like a jigsaw so has a bit of a breeze.

the humidty is fairly low at around 20-30rh but at current they are in propagators so i kind of ruled humidity out as a problem. unless its too humid. although the vents are open.

the temps go from lows of 19 to highs of 30.

there are 2 fans in the room on constant on oscillating.

the light is a 600w hps but on a digital ballast and operating at 440w it is around 2 and a half to 3 feet from the seedlings.

im thinking most likely cause is the temps however being in a loft that is not insulated keeping steady temps can be quite tricky. it never goes below 19 or above 30 though, more recently it has been holding more steadily as i have adjusted the radiators and added a 2nd fan. now it has highs of 28 and lows of 20 but may not hold depending on outside temps.

what else could be wrong? any help or advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the speedy reply mr sunhine. is that Deffo? They're kind of yellowing and leaves are pointing up aswell as odd growth i.e one leaf bigger than the other.

Hiya MisterMaster, I can't really give much help with Coco? how often are you watering? and how many ml?

If you hold your hand at the level(Tops) of seedlings does it get Hot after a few mins?

12 days is a while with no signs? of further Growth? but when you Transplant it knocks em back sometimes..

I'm not sure but doesn't Coco dry up pretty quick? try putting little finger about " into Coco at edge of pot to see if any moist Coco sticks to your fingers...

Take it you've Not added Nutes or owt

Peace

Hi cc2012, they havent been watered since day 1 as they are in propagators and medium is still fairly moist. Havent given them any nutes. They havnt been transplanted that is where they were started. They were given 250ml i believe between the 5 of them, so roughly 50ml each. Have tried hand gettin hot and it doesnt. Am baffled as to why theyre struggling so much.

I've done a few coco grows now and from my experience they need watered alot, Best way is to just give them a set amount and see how long it takes for the coco to dry out and take it from there.
I use 10l pots and once they start taking off they drink about 2 litres a day, though obviously plant size and temps will affect this(I like big plants and my room is usually quite hot) also depends if you have anything in your coco to aid water retention i.e. vermiculite or similar (I don't)
I need to water daily as the amount of water the pots can hold doesn't always last 2 full days in my room, nothing worse than going in and they are all upside down.
But yeah with 15l pots, even in coco you should get a few days, just keep an eye on them as coco does dry out much quicker than soil.
Good luck with it Zootz ;)
CaLiKiD24_RIU_10-20-2012, 07:24 AM_thats the 1 thing i really noticed that i had to do when i was using coco coir, i had to water daaily, 2 times daily at times when they got bigger. I started
to get deformed leaves like that, but my leaves became very hardy, crispy like. So i just went back to soil
Don't know if that's any help? been looking around trying to find a bit more Info for you...with you saying about Temps going into High 30's(Think that's this Post?LOL..Baked and on a Sunday...The Shame of it!) back to being serious if your Temps have been getting that Hot it might have dried Coco out quicker than normal? So that's 50ml per Plant? How often?

Peace

50ml is all they have had. And u r proper baked haha! I ment like the highest it gets is 30. No higher. And theyve been damp since day 1. So to recap.

Planted in 1 litre propagator in coco 12 days ago. Gave 50ml of 5.9 phd water to each the day they were planted. They been under 440w hps at about 3 feet away. Theyve not had any other water since, are still damp, and are growing very slow if at all and unhealthy for sure.

On another note cheers for ur efforts pal. Wen ur baked on a sunday and still goin out ur way to help a fellow grower out. Awesome!

Cheers m8, Tis got me stumped...only thing that's buggin me is "12 days ago. Gave 50ml of 5.9 phd water to each the day they were planted. Theyve not had any other water since, are still damp. Not 100% sure on this but seems strange? would've thought with so little water they would have been bone dry by now? maybe? I could be very wrong but if your Temps have been going Low than High..could this change in Temp & Humidity have maybe caused the Coco to remain/become Damp?? in places?(The Surface)

Dunno? I know babies don't need a lot of water..when mine are that sorta size..I give 20ml every other day with a syringe...

Just thinking Coco drys out quite quick normally...

Peace

You need to feed them some nutrients as coir has none. They will soon starve to death if not fed something. I've never grown in straight coco so I will defer recommendations on starting nute levels to others with experience.

i was replying to that thread, when he closed it. Smh.. I see tons of spam threads and that is the only one that gets closed during my reply...ill try to retype everything I said..

From what I've read, you haven't watered for 12 days.. That's your problem I think. I grow in coco, and I clone in coco. Now I'm no expert, this is my first grow doing coco but my 6th total grow and like I said I'm not a expert but I water my clones every 2-3 days and my big plants I water daily. Coco though it's moist it don't hold much water from what I read which is why I went to coco hempy buckets which is passive hydroponics.

edit- forgot to mention coco has no nutrients it sololy relies in you to water and feed it, give a slight dose of nutes and if it likes it give it more and more until full dose

Thanks bulgeye im not sure such small plants should be recieving nutes but have heard of weak solutions which normally i would start with after there settled and had a good water till run off. However these have only had the first dampening water to get them germed and spouted. The pots still feel noticeably heavier than a dry pot of coco i have. So im cautious of nuting them atm. Are uou sure this is what they need?

Thanks domyst. Have considered it but budget is tite atm and i sort of rely on heat of hps sos not to run radiators all day.

Hey fir3dragon. Thanks for reply. Do u think its possible top of the coco could be damp from drips from the top of the propagator and the underneath is fairly dry? I have considered this but dnt want to drown such young plants.

I'm sure that they have enough nutrient in them for the first 2 weeks of life but then they start to go down hill rather quickly if you do not get them some food. Even starter soil mixes for germination have trace levels of nutrients in them that is just enough to get a plant through 2 weeks healthy. Coir has none. I would definitely not give them something full strength or even half strength. I'm guessing more in the under 100ppm to start but others growing in coco should advise you as I understand it is a bit tricky to master and my experience in it is zero.

You need to water those babies. I don't use coco, but when I start in pro Mix I saturate the peat completely the first watering and approximately 4-5 days later I soak them again. Obviously it depends on pot size, medium and lights to determine watering frequency, but 50ml was definitely not enough water for a first watering unless the plant is growing in a shot glass.

Overall, if you are erring on nutrients, it is on the right side of the equation. Far too many people start them in hot soil and that is often a killer. I think they will take off fine in the next week. Larger starter pots seem to delay top green growth a little as well but it will get there.

The guys I know that grow great weed in coir are real pros. I would read as many threads on the topic as you can find as I'm sure they are riddled with great pro tips specific to the medium.
