Carbon filter not working...

Sorry for the double update, wasn't expecting this quick of results considering I had the plant outta the tent yesterday when installing the new filter. I do have some ona gel down there as well but it was there during both smell tests.

Phresh filter at 75% fan speed=NO smell
Cheap filter at 50% fan speed= low smell

Well it sucks that the cheap filter didn't work very well. I'm due to replace mine soon, guess i'll stick with the expensive ones. I have a Mountain Air filter is was expensive but has been working great for over 5 years now.

If you are going to keep both of them you could hook up the cheap one to a short tube and a small fan and just keep it in the room. It will still remove the smell but not affect your in-out air flow.

I agree with using ONA . I would get a jar of ONA . Drill a few holes in the lid and place in basement . You can get LINEN scent and your basement will just smell like fabric softener . The stuff works miracles. A jar will last for 8 to 12 weeks . A complete flowering cycle .

Yeah i use the gel, thinking about getting the linen next considering my washing machine is down there as well so it'd make sense.

Do you or anyone else reading have experience using the linen? Any thoughts on it being just as good or not as good as the original?

Yeah, the Phresh was only another $33 bucks tho so oh well. If it lasts at least 1.5 years $83 is pennies. Yeah i was thinking about doubling up but now that the Phresh is working so well I won't need it.

I had the linen liquid once, worked pretty good. It doesn't smell out of the ordinary for a basement. Never tried any of the other scents.

@Anon Emaus hey i was reading this thread and had a quick question for you.

I have a 8 X 8 X 8 gorilla grow tent with 2 solar storm 880s and will be buying fan, carbon filter, ducting, controller combo......what would u suggest for cfm rating to match? Im going with phresh so i want good measurement advice if possible.....appreciate any suggestions and love your pic set up from earlier it really helped me out.

Smell outside the house was getting a bit intense. Both tents have filters in them exhausting outside. Looking all over the net, pricing larger filters, etc... I've always ran my fans at 100% even though they are on controllers. After this 'reminder' I reduced the speed on both, temps are the same, smell is gone. I was pretty shocked to be honest. That problem was plaguing me for a couple grows. In the future I would get a 750cfm filter for a 440cfm fan for example if I needed to run at full power. Glad I didn't have to buy anything else. I ordered the coconut carbon from a hydro store. I bought a 16 pound box. Same carbon phresh uses.


I would over size the filter. I don't care what info tells you other wise. That info is there to steer you towards buying more filters. Like if you got a 4 in fan put a 6 or 8 inch filter on it.

You can drill the rivets out and refill it. You can bake the existing carbon to refresh it.

I've done both.

Filters come with a synthetic mesh in them. The aluminum mesh on the left is to replace the synthetic one. After it is replaced I then can stick the filter in the oven without taking it apart. Build a few this way and always have backups. This filter is a cheapo that I refilled with the good coco carbon.

Yeah intake vent was at 7"x15" and gave negative pressure, I just reduced it to 7"x7.5" to give some more.

phresh or can are good filters.

Hey sorry man, i just saw this now. Honestly idk lol i'm new to the whole thing. Your running a lil over double my tent, i run a 200cfm filter so you'll want at least like 500cfm. Get a fan thats a lower CFM than the filter then.
Part of ventilating is knowing what temps you're dealing with so you might have to expirement to find the right balance to get you the right temp control.
You maybe already have everything by now tho lol if you do whatd u get?

I built three recently using window screening wrapped with carbon pre-filter (both from the hardware store) and computer fans (look for the big ones from power supplies - higher cfm). I've two wired to the same 12V wall wart just sitting on top of my grow cabinet (cabinet made from one of those 2x4x5' plastic shelving units people put in their garage - wrapped in foil bubble wrap insulation and industrial waterproof duct tape (also from hardware store). The shelves themselves are vented (little slots) and the top is only covered up 1/2 way. A small USB fan keeps things moving and the little scrubbers just clean the air and vent right back into the room. Am 3 weeks into flower, and very little smell - I will hook up the third filter if things start getting smelly. Each filter cost under 5 dollars tho build. Lots of good plans out there. Also a bowl of carbon or baking soda will help absorb odours in the room - another trick is to get a spritzer bottle with 50% water and vodka and spray it around, or wave a damp vinegar soaked towel about for near immediate effects. Don't really want to use air fresheners or even that ona as they can alter the flavour of your product. I also agree slowing down the fan and changing the carbon would make a big difference.

@Anon Emaus yea bro I just got my phresh filter 745 com with hurricane inline fan at 735......just got all my electricals to. Got a 8 outlet fireproof surge protector for lights and fans. Then got an extension cord of 13 amp 125 v 1625 maximum watts for my water transfer pump. Getting ready to hook everything up and then start testing the hydro system make sure there's no leaks etc. Any advice from any body before I plug everything up. I know not to run everything off one room so that's why I have extension cords that are industrial type.
