carbon filter placement???

im a newcomer around riu, got my cabinet setup for the most part (in the cfl section). i was wondering if anyone can post some pics of there carbon filters and the placement of there carbon filters? im a lil stuck on how i should rig it up and wana see what some of you have

Well, if you can, put it up high so it exhausts the rising hot air. As for rigging, I use L-brackets bolted to my wall and just sit my canfan right on them. I've also seen people use straps and hang it on its side up near the ceiling. Sorry no pics.

heres what he was talking about. this isnt in use right now but its in straps just chillin in my closet. def put it high so it catches the rising heat. good luck.

One advantage to having your filter being pulled through inside the growspace is no dust inside your fan or filter. This way all the dust is easily removed by vacuuming the prefilter instead of taking apart your assembly and painstakingly cleaning the inside of your fan and filter. You can always have the filter half inside and the fan outside via ductwork if the fan heat is an issue. But hey, if that doesn't bother you and it's much easier to mount outside, go for it bro :D

EDIT: Also, the dust inside the filter will clog up the carbon pores which could shorten the life of your filter considerably. You can't vacuum the microscopic stuff deep inside. But then again, you could take the prefilter from the outside and put it inside :D Just a thought.

this doesnt make sense to me AT ALL ...

maybe im just new. it seems like if the carbon filter were on the outside that it a) wouldnt take care of the smell as quickly and efficiently and b) wouldnt clean the air inside the cab where your plants are ... the area we are trying to purify in the first place. Does anyone else concur?

actually, it doesn't matter what the inside of the cab smells like. what you don't want, is the smell being released outside of the cab. if the filter were inside the cab, how would the air inside be pulled out, lol....?

It does work, but complications can arise from the dust and grime. If one looks at most carbon filters, they have prefilters placed on the outside.

Well, if the filter is inside, all that needs to be done is have ducting running outside the growspace. It's how it is usually done if one wants to run their CF in the most efficient manner possible.

EDIT: Most retail and commercial filters are designed to be used this way. To be inside the contaminated space. To keep everything contained.

space in a cab is a premium. if you mount the filter outside the cab, you not only have more space, you reduce heat, and eliminate the need for yet another fan. you're going to have to have some way to remove air from the the grow area. the most efficient/cheap way to do this is to pull the air out of the cab by way of an outside mounted filter/fan. pretty friggin simple....

The air has to go somewhere so everything in the room is never really contained in the manner you speak of.....having a heavy filter hanging above plants sometimes doesn't seem like the best idea to some and the space it takes up can be a nuisance......sucking the air from the room then filtering outside the room works just as well...yeah the pre filter is useless but i am sure many can make a filter that goes inside that can be used as a pre filter.....well my point is placing the filter in or out the area works about the same so put it where you see fit....

Ok, why exactly would you need another fan to remove air from the grow space? Your fan attached to the filter performs this duty. If you are concerned about heat from the fan, you could always mount the fan outside and run ducting inside to the filter.

And I understand space is at a premium inside most grow rooms, but that is no excuse to use your equipment in an improper manner.

Contained as in going nowhere but through the filter. It's quite simple, a vacuum is created.

Yep I agree. It can be a nuisance but I also stated that it works and also supplied a solution to doing it this way. I'm not saying it's wrong, I know it works! But there are complications that can arise like I already said. I'm saying it's not what most filters are designed to do. Most are designed to be PULLED THROUGH.

Thanks for all the help guys. From what I've learned being here a short time is.... trial and error. I've got it hooked up outside my cab for now. If it doesn't work for me ill try it inside. Thanks again for all the input

This is the correct answer. that white foam on the carbon filter is for dust. It is designed to have air sucked through the filter not pushed through
