Carnivorous plants in grow room.

I had a problem with gnats a little while back. I realized the grow tent was perfect for some nepenthes and flytraps. I've always wanted to grow some and they're fairly easy to take care of with good lights being the main concern. They're growing awesome and my gnat problem is gone. Anyone else use carnivorous plants for pest control?

I was at Lowes staring at a couple carnivorous plants earlier, was wondering the exact same thing. Doesn't seem like it could hurt. Doesn't get any more organic that that.

Periodically I put in the odd carnivorous plants in my veg and flower tents as I see them on sale at places like the grocery store.

I also collect up lady bugs when I find them outside, and toss them in there too for good measure.

That's about as preventative as I like to get when I know I don't have pest problems. The Neem oil comes out only if I suspect I might have a bug issue.

My nepenthes has done awesome in my tent. I got it from Lowe's for about ten bucks and it was in a sad state. Now it's beautiful with huge pitchers! Luckily they seem to love the bright light. It catches tons of bugs, so much that they piled up above the acid and started growing mold. Shaking the pitcher kills the mold though.

They're selling 2 separate carnivorous plants right now that are "dormant" (dried to a crisp) in a package for $9.99. I was a little nervous about bringing them back from the dead.

Yeah I wouldn't reccomend that for a first timer. That's like giving a newbie in cannabis growing an unrooted clone. The dormant plant would certainly work but it'll be very slow to reactivate and then slow to actually start growing. I reccomend a fresh one if you can find it, I think they sell active ones on amazon. That way you can get to know how the plant reacts to certain things and how it grows. There's a smaller learning curve than cannabis though that's for sure haha.

I personally wouldn’t put any potted plants from Lowe’s or a grocery store into my tent. I’d be too afraid of bringing in unwanted pests. This may be a dumb question, but couldn’t brining some of those plants in the tent actually attract more pests?

What’s your climate or rough location?

Not a stupid question at all! Carnivorous plants will attract bugs inside the grow tent but anything outside will be oblivious to it's existence. The only bugs it catches will be ones that would have been on your plants!

That’s why your flytraps live. I’ve killed two in California. Not much humidity here.

How are your carnivorous plants doing? Im considering getting some sundews for my room.
Its actually what lead me to this forum.

Do these things catch stuff like mites and aphids or only shit that can fly around into its mouth??
I guess my question is would other bugs be attracted enough to crawl over and fuck off the weed plants? Or do they just catch flying insects that are attracted to the mouth and fly in??

Good question.

Nope. The margin's little hairs have small openings so that the plant doesn't waste its precious energy on trapping tiny insects. The traps can only shut a few times before it dies and wilts off of the plant, so they need the kill to be worthwhile.
