Cloning help

Hi all :weed: I tried to clone for the first time. I stuck my cutting in a 16 oz party glass under some floros and it has been under there for about 10 days in a humidity box i made. I wasn't seeing any roots coming out the bottom but the plant seemed fine so i took a peak and gently pulled it out the dirt and there are a few roots an inch long or less coming out the of it. What should I do now? leave under the weak flors till the roots shoot out the bottom of the party cup or should i transplant it to veg ?? advice would be great :) thanks. :leaf:

curious also, when is the right time to transplant. I would take a wild stab and think when the roots are long enough to be able to reach down in the nut solution if growing hydro. If you are planting soil I would think at any time now seeing roots are forming. Just watch out and don't overfeed them, from what I have seen and read here you will burn and possibly kill the little ladies.

yeah. just let the roots pop out of the small container your in. because if it working for you there. your doing good. then transplant later. be easy on the fertilizer until it has some real roots. I don't use any fertilizer or rooting hormones. to clone. it slows it down. plant will not grow roots if it has a good source of nutrients at hand.

First off NEVER pull a rooting cutting out of the soil. The roots are extremely tender, you might have had 3" roots before you jerked it out. As long as it "seemed fine" what the hell possessed you to pull it up by the roots?

Bad move, you surely set it back if it survives the ordeal.

I know >.< I'm a noob lol sorry ... so keep it in the humidity box and don't yank on it anymore??... got cha :) lol

there was part of me that wondered if there were bigger roots when i "yanked" it out the soil. The first time there was one little root the next day there were a few. Both times i pulled it out i looked to see if there were roots that might have been severed during the "peeking" I looked, I didnt see any. but yea total noob mistake on my behalf. please excuse my ignorance on the matter im just learning how to do all this.

Im gonna put it under the floros till i see those roots come out the bottom

No reason to apologize. But do a google image search on "root hairs".

They are fuzzy almost microscopic roots that actually do all the work we imagine the root system is responsible for, i.e the uptake of nutes and water. Pulling the seedling up knocks off all the hairs which is where the rubber meets the road.

Just be patient and leave it alone. I use rapid rooters and a $5 little green house that I got from lowes. I also use an aero cloner that I made that works pretty good also. It could take a month to see roots out of the bottom. Roots out of the bottom to me mean that its time to transplant.

Hey Tommy, how do you like those rapid rooter plugs? I was in the process (all done now) of ordering everything needed for my indoor hydroponic grow. I plan on starting from seeds and was going to use rockwool cubes until I read about the RR plugs. Liking the idea that they are PH neutral I decided to order them. Have you used rockwool before? If so do you like the RR plugs better?

Well any way sorry to blab on, I just wanted to hear from you how you like the rapid rooters.

I tend to disagree on the transplant part...

my roots come out the bottom all the time and when I check the rootball it's still got plenty of room to go...

I like the RR plugs. Its was pretty effortless. I have never used rockwool so I cant compare the 2.

Can I at least set the solo cup under its veg (HPS) light instead of the weak floros? or does it still need the floros for root development?

If a cutting is upright by end of the second day after taking it, it is 90% likely to go on to having a root system 7-10 days after taking it. Basically if it hasn't gone over and stayed there, it's ok. 90% RH for the first 7-10 days, plain water, ph'ed if you like. 0.3 ec feed after that increasing as you see fit.
I use one 125w CFL to root the cuttings as they don't seem to respond too well to strong light.
Transplanting can be done from 10 days onwards but the stronger the roots are beforehand, the better the results will be. Impatience is the killer.

It can go quite awhile in that cup, get the humidity off now and make sure you have drain holes in the cup. Since you disturbed it already I would leave it alone and let her get strong again before transplant. I"ve grown 3 footers(not the best scenario) in those cups so be patient. JAS
