Day 51
This grow should deliver some solid quality meds for my patient. Six months ago I would have been overjoyed with the way this is going, but my standards have changed. Not to complain, but I'm a bit disappointed with this grow -- the buds stretched and haven't filled in as I hoped they would. I've grown BB#3 before, and I remember the bud structure being more compact last time. The OGx2 is totally new to me and an oddball random strain, I've never even seen a picture of it in a grow or as a finished bud. So I have no references with that one. I will say the BB's buds are hard as a rock.
System sciences applies to a grow room. Everything is interconnected, the components influence and interact with each other and need to be balanced. It's possible that in adding the SIPs I increased the plants capacity in some way that I did not compensate for in other elements of the system. My last grow PSE (pre-SIP era) had four different strains, and none had stems that stretched this way (leaving the colas open instead of tightly packed). I'll be using SIPs again, so the experiments will continue. I might grow another GG#4 next time and see if the bud structure changes from the previous PSE grow. Those were probably the fattest densest colas from my last grow.
The only hypothesis I've come up with is that last grow I had to keep my light higher, so I started this grow with the lights pretty high. The OG grew within 10" of the light, and instead of burning it ate it up. So, next grow I'll keep the lights lower throughout the grow, and see if that keeps the bud structure tighter. It's possible that somehow the continuous availability of water provided by the SIP gives the plants the ability (and maybe the need?) to be closer to the light without burning? Or its strain specific... I'll know more as the years roll by.
The OGx2 is starting to change color, finally. It still feels like it could fill out more, but probably not by much. The BB is right on schedule, and I'm betting next week I see amber and start the harvest. Since I'm leaving the tent running to finish the OG, I'll probably take the top buds off the BB and let the lower ones cook a while longer, that usually works for me. It doesn't make them bigger, but the lower buds can go from under-cooked to solidly ready to harvest with an extra week or two under the lights.
