Comparison of grow methods for small room

So I'm new here, and to growing, but have been lurking for a while researching, researching and researching. I know this information is out there but I can't seem to find anything that directly compares the different grow methods (soil, hydro, aero, ect). I'm in the early stage of designing a grow room for a closet that is about 3x4x5 feet.

So what I'm hoping to get out of this thread is to see some peoples opinions on the pros and cons of different grow methods in general, as well as in respect to a small 3x4x5 grow room. Also, it would be great to hear how some people would set up a space this size if they were doing it for them selves. Thanks for the help.

First timer? Stick with soil. You will learn the signals that the plants give you and have the time to fix them. With hydro its alot harder to catch an issue as it seems to be way more sensitve of a medium. Get your green thumb in the dirt then move it to water if you want to try.

What would u recommend for freshly sprouted seeds light wise...started a thread but haven't seen it pop up yet, def don't wanna "hi-jack", this persons post...just was wondering, thks

some cfls or i use t-8s from a distance of 24-30 inches for seedlings then move them closer as the true leaves show up. Hijack complete haha

gotigers, thanks for the tip. I'm almost definitely going to go with soil first time around.

But hypothetically why would someone want to go with hydro over soil in this situation? I'd like to learn more about what advantages each method has so when I buy all of my kit and as I get my space set up, it will be easy to convert to a more advanced system for future grows.

Also I'm a little worried about my grow room only being 5ft tall is this even doable with 5ft of vertical? Is it realistic that I could grow two plants in there or am I going to have to stick with one for a space that small?

Ya five foot is fine. just dont veg past about 18-22 inches. That should leave you enough space. As far as hydro, its faster, more productive, more expensive, more complicated and more sensitive. In other words, more work, but more bud, that is the big draw to hydro.

umm. what about vertical grow that I've been hearing about. Is that just with a bulb in the middle of the plants?

If no cfls, and or T8s...would a 400, work? Or would this be to much? I also have a flor.25watt,along with a plain white light. I've heard not to much light but I also wanna make sure I have enough light going as well...again I hate to hiJack, just looking fire all I can get on this situation..again thks, I'm just wondering when my post will finally pop up??. Thks again

400's in a closet may be too much heat unless you have a good vent. setup or the ballast is outside the closet. I love hydro but it is super touchy and I dont like to mess with my plants that much so I stick with soil.

I have a 400 with digital ballast that allows it to run at 250 also. I veg with 250 MH and flower with 400 hps. I start the light when the sprouts are an inch tall at 18-20 inches, then when they show green, down to 12 - 14 inches.

OK, I gotta add something. I could never grow anything in my life, and I started growing weed in DWC and have found it easy and not at all touchy. Different experiences I guess, but don't overlook hydro with simple DWC preferred.

....so what size/type of light would you use prior to them becoming a inch, just use the 250, but keep far away?.... Does anyone know how long untill a post will appear, from the time u typed it out? I still do.t see it.?? Again thks for the info...
