My son chose the traditional route and got a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford. He and almost his entire group at Google run on Macs as did most of the guys I worked with. Since we could have chosen whatever we wanted I guess we didn't find them limiting. We also ran MS Windows and other OSes too.

Anyway enjoy your job that's all that matters and whatever hardware you prefer, vive la différence.

Really, I cant say I know any enterprise environments or datacenters running Apple server builds. How interesting. I work mainly with servers so my exposure to apple is quite limited.

Yes i find it to be quite limiting as opposed to working with open source. Nothing can really be as unlimited as open source. Same with Windows. Albeit a lot more hardware customization availability there.

You must have been in the game a long time 97 was the start of mcse certs I believe. I was coding MUDs on telnet then as a teen.

We are developers so we don't run servers those are the purview of System Adminstrators. Our machines are for code development and other type of algorithm development. So for your use our machines would not work at all.

Looking forward to trying them out. The nvme drive I have now is no slouch. idr what it is exactly I think its the commercial version of the 960 pro? not really sure.
I just do games and lots of browser tabs. no rendering or anything so this system is completely overkill for my purposes and will be for a long time lmao.
Really looking forward to the new gpus launching this year. Hoping this competition will be a win for the consumer

No idea. It's had a hard knock life. It seems to coincidental but not long after I took it apart to fix the broken keys the fans would randomly run at full blast for a while then it would reboot. It also had that LG retina display ghosting issue so I'm glad to see it gone.

Yeah that's what makes me unhappy with Apple. They rarely, adequately, address their issues and if you adopt early you may get a nasty surprise. Usually I wait a year. This time I'm getting one of the first new release iMacs. I wonder what I'll find.

I'm currently using my router as my main machine while I wait for a new graphics card for my old iMac. So I'm currently running Fedora 32 and it's good. As usual Kmail fights Gmail LOL but the most annoying is a 19" monitor.

So how's your new Macbook?

The only real complaint I’ve seen about the new iMac is the aluminum plate gets stripped out easily and the bolts break if you switch between the stand and vesa mount often. Apple changed their manual to say you’re only supposed to do it once.

I’m loving the new MacBook. Not a big fan of having to use a usb hub and I miss the magnetic power connector

That's he thing I dislike about my MacBook Pro is I have to replace the magnetic power connector every year LOL.
 
lol you're not returning the new one are you? I had no idea you could replace the video card on the imac. I assumed everything was fixed like notebooks.
 
Last night my Macbook Pro had a jealous fit over all the attention my iMac was getting. It let me know I need a new hard drive. Walmart has a 1 TB Western Digital SSD for 109.00 so guess what I'll be doing today in between configuring my new iMac LOL. Best of all it doesn't have a T2 chip and will boot from an external drive with any OS AND I have full, tested backups. Yeah that's the new bug, the newest iMacs with T2 chip won't allow external boot drive even when you've configured your security to allow it.

Let's see the iMac HD to SSD, iMac GPU and now laptop HD to SSD. That's three, I should be finished for awhile.

We detest Apple in this house for our useage. But after numerous gaming builds for son and his friends I have had to replace 2 evo 960's, 1 950 and 3 M.2 NVME's in the last 4 years out of around 10 SSD'S and 4 M.2's. Excellent service. No questions asked replacements in a hurry. The M.2 are awsome boots. Just keep a back up always. 006.jpg347.jpg
