Container Size / Shape..

.. i've been looking for some info on contanier size / shape and can't really find any info on what i'm really looking for...

so, here's my deal.. in my grow area, i have plenty of room height wise, but only about a 2 x 3 area deep and wide.. i was wondering what would happen if i were to use smaller pots that weren't so wide, but had plenty of depth to them instead.. would the roots still have plenty of room to grow with lots of depth, or would they only grow so far down, then get root bound??
i remember reading once in a high times article were it said that plants would only branch out as wide as their pots were, which is why people who grow in beds get bigger yields and bigger plants vs pots.. but this was a hightimes article, and i'm not niave enough to believe everything i read in ithere..
like i said, i've been doing some research on this topic for well over a year or so now, and can never really find any real info on it at all, so i was wondering if anyone on here has any experience on this subject..
would 3 gallons of pot space be the same if say the 3 gallons were to be in a 10 inch wide pot x say 15 inches deep as if it were 3 gallons total but say only 4 inches wide buy 30 inches deep or w/e?? is 3 gallons equal to 3 gallons despite pot size and shape i guess is the real question..
thanks in advance to any and all input... :)

3 gallons is 3 gallons but the question is how far will the roots grow downward. I read once that plants from seed tend to root deeper while plants from clone tend to branch out a little more. Either way 30 inches seems awful deep to me. I would think tho that if your plants are thirsty enough and the soil loose enough your roots would grow as deep as they need to. Just my opinion here.

i was just using the 30 inches as an ex, but you do get the just of what i was trying to say, lol...
i don't know if i've ever heard about seeds growing deeper roots vs clones, good info m8, as i usually start all of my grows from seeds..

and yah, i'm just not sure if roots will keep growing down so long as they have space or is there a limit to how deep that they will grow before they stop ?

Wish I could say for sure how deep is too deep. I'm sure there is somewhat of a limit but think of how big some of these outdoor plants get you know those roots are deep as hell. If the soil is loose enough I'm willing to bet you could reach a pretty good depth.

yah, that's my thoughts as well, just not sure if the lack of a wider container would really have any downfalls vs say a wider pot..

i was just talking to a grow buddy a few minutes ago about this, and he said that the plants would probably only grow one big dominant top cola and not much side branching, which is what i had read in hightimes all those years ago...

Makes sense. My main concern with lack of root branching would be plant sturdiness. It might have a tendency to wanna lean over especially with one dominant main cola. Hopefully some other opinions would come in cause I'm curious about this too now.
