DIY Carbon Filter

I used a 4" coffee can you could use a larger one if you want to. Cut the bottom out with a can opener.

I got a peice of gutter guard from the hardware store about $1.70.

Alum screen will work better. But at the time I made this I did not have any. It was around $6.00 and I was over budget on the grow room. I have some now and it is better to work with hands down.

Cut enough to fold around can.

Fold around can. You will need to cut slots about every 2". After folding around can you can tap with a hammer to compact and remove sharp edges.

This is were screen is easyer to work with. The gutter guard is stronger.

Add hose, alum. tape, and hose clamp.

Hang up and attach to fan.

Then put this carbon bag in it. My $3 carbon filter. (by Panhead)

I had posted this in the grow room design area but I think it will help more people find it here.

i was also thinking, do you think that you could put some type of finer screen on the bottom of the can, and then pour the activated carbon from pet stores in it? i think it would make for a more efficient filter, what about you guys?

by the way, this looks to be an awesome design, good thinking.

Thanks

I thought about screen but I was worried about dust in the fan motor. The bag is so easy to pull out to look at or change. I have not changed mine yet.

If someone tries it I would like to know how well it worked. Then I can do an update.

im trying to draw up a sketch on paint right now, but i was thinking, you could have the fan blowing into the bottom of the coffee can, then having the exust running slightly upward and out. maybe by putting a 90 degree bend in the ducting coming off the bottom then run for about a foot to keep any unwanted activated carbon pellets from finding their way into a fan.

That would work but from what I under stand the carbon filter works better if you suck air thru. I could be wrong on this but the resrarch I did tended to show this.

If you want to just pour the carbon in the filter I would do the following:

1) Use alum. screen instead of the gutter guard.
2) Then I would take a leg piece of pantyhose and cover the screen.

definatly, that is what i was thinking to use as a screen, if this way would work, but i think what im thinking about doing would work in the opposite direction as well

Great, Let me know how blowing air works out. My room would be better if I could blow air instead of sucking air.
