DIY LED grow lights experiences

LEDgroupbuy.com, best place for supplies, IMO a mix of Cree xml- cool, neutral, warms. driven by invetronics drivers, with Makerled heatsinks, with the addition of luxeon rebel 660nm with 700ma driver from rapidled.com.

I found something intesresting, i compared the Luxeon rebel reds and the Oslon SSL reds efficeicies and spectrums

the luxeons:

the oslons:

Capture d’écran 2012-12-31 à 16.29.45.jpg

the red 660nm is narrower for the luxeon, and for the reds 625nm, this is the opposit!

anyway i choosed to go with the oslons ssl80, as efficient as the luxeons if not better and they have a narrower angle (80°)

I will try an engine with OSLONS SSL80, 2 streetwhite 140lm 5700K / 2 reds 625nm / 2 reds 660nm, at 500mA, 12 engines for 2x2' (60x60cm), so 95W, 24W/sq ft.

The other possibility is to go with 7 leds engines, 1RB/2CW/2R/2HR but only if i can find bin R2 3200K XTEs

It seems that the deep blue Oslon has a narrower peak than the luxeon:

Oslons are cheaper anyway

Good findings, Yeah, as you prob remember from knna you don't want narrower peak .. but oslon is not as narrow they should work a treat for you. What are you going to use for 625's?

Is it possible to solder the xte/xpg on the same pad like oslon = on the same module?
Cree is so much better in whites than osram and luxeon...

hi Jubiare,

Yes i remember this. I will use Oslons for the 625s I have them in JS bin. My pcb is a 7 leds oslons/xp footprints so impossible to use Rebels.

Hi Ledcrank,

  • Is it possible to solder the xte/xpg on the same pad like oslon = on the same module?

yes absolutely, if the footprint is designed for, the footprint i used for my custom 7 leds PCBs is not excatly an oslon footprint and not excatly an XP footprint but she works for both

Yes Crees have the best whites but i bought some streetwhite 140lm Oslons 5700K for a nice price. But i will try some engines with XREs, even if the angle is a wider.

(if possible i prefer to make an all oslons SSL80 for a good color mixing, with all emitters at the same angle)

I am not 100% sure if I understood you.
I am thinking about using _standard_ tripleLED star mcbcp and soldering 2 osrams and 1 xpg on it. Will it work? Or do I need custom mcpb for such mix.

yes this is a good idea, so you will buy a 3XP star or a 3Oslons star mcpcb, ok, and reflow solder the emitters?

I have a good friend who is a specialist of this question, i will ask him on wednesday and give you the answer, if you can wait a little bit

1XP/1oslon625/1oslon660 could be a nice mix

That would be sweet. I was actually going to buy the xml2 2700k, but the idea with mixing oslons 80 and xpg2 is starting to be more tempting.

I have no hurry, I am finishing my first small panel right now, the second will follow later. But I love to know and design ;)

Guod: thanks! Do you have some wisdom to share :) if it`s possible (if it will work efficient) to use one lens for mixed led components?

we shouldn't get so in Love with modules and such anyway, we can space them out any way we like as diyers ...

modules are nice and confy to work with, but with such efficient diodes we can maximize space/watts employed in a more homogeneous way?

at leAst that's what I believe, nice to see others working with modules anyhow!

Happy New Year all! nice DIY leds projects for 1013!

thanks a lot god for the links, especially the second one!

IMAO i don't think it will be possible ledcranck, especially is you mix some brands, with different angles.
It is only possible to find multiled optics for 3 oslons or 3 rebels, or 3 Crees.

Hi Jubiare,

you are right but we can see a multiled module as a single led with the right spectrum, and distribute them along the grow area for homogeneous amounts of light.

The color mixing is almost perfect with modules, and the design is more reliable. But this is my opinion. Less parts, less solder points, modularity...

For a small DIY lamp i would use single stars , but for a bigger lamp, i think that modules are better.

hi everyone on this wonderfull post would you be willing to share your specs with me im looking to build a led grow light but confused on the spectrums i should use. its going to be an aquaponic system growing veggies and later after the system is set up and working like a carm ill put some mj in it. it going to be a 2 layer constant flow system small veggies on bottom big on top! your help would be much apprecated!!!
thanks Lemme know!

ledsupply.com & rapidled.com both are really helpful when it comes to leds. ledsupply.com has the makersled fixture and majority of the spectrums out there.

My last lamps are with Oslons SSL80 (they have very efficient 450/630/660 leds with the right angle 80° so no meed for lenses).
What is the part number of the Oslon SSL80 that you use for the 450nm, 630 and 660. Is it the CQ7P-2U3U-W5-1 for the Deep blue? What part number for the reds. I just ordered a bunch of Luxeon emitters to try out after not having much luck with LedEngin leds. I'm also going to try using some 735nm and 365nm for the heck of it.

Greetz! And thank you!
