Drying and curing

So im sure this has been talked about a thousand rimes on several threads and i apologize i couldnt find them. Im having some issues. Plants come out amazing smell amazing . Hang dry in a 2x4 tent with a fan in corner facing wall. Temp is usuall between 62-65 degrees and humidity stays with in 60-65% whne plants first go in i have a exhaust fan that comes in above 65%. Usually takea about 10 days for planta to feel dry. Now my issue is after dry and cure the buds usually smell nice but have bad taste. My question is i see alot of people say when they jar the buds its above 65% . I wait for the crack aound that i hear about before jarring and mine are always around 55-60% in jar. Is that my problem? Even after 2-3 month cure they taste the same and all the bud taste the same even if strain is different. Someone please HELP !!!

Sounds strange that smells nice and tastes bad. But do you got hygrometers in and close the jars? 60-65 is a little better. 3 months later it's still 55-60? Do you burp at all?

Yes burp daily for first week. And once a week after that. Depending on the humidity. Amd naw usually humidity will settle around 50-55 after about 3 months but taste never forms. Im assuming taste is chloryphyl but not sure.

How do you determine when your buds are ready to jar?

How do you determine when your buds are ready to jar?
Drying is determined by hanging the plants in a very specific environment (60% humidity and 60 degreesF). You have a small fan that GENTLY circulates the air around the plants but never blows directly at them. It depends on the density of the buds/plants, but it usually takes a few plants 10 days to 2 weeks to hang-dry. After the plants have hang-dried, you do your trimming. Then you get some big Mason jars and some of those little humidity gauges and you place one in each jar of trimmed buds so that you can read it through the glass. Then you watch what the humidity is doing -how fast it's jumping (IF it is)...and so on. Once you get a stable humidity level that doesn't fluctuate anymore, you keep the jars sealed in a cool, dark place for several weeks or months....Or, you can place the stabilized buds into Grove bag, heat-seal it and then store them for even longer. Good luck!

It is challenging and takes time to figure out I think every time is not the same. I couldn't go by the snap. I'd rather go in the jar too early than too late. Gotta use big canning jars with the lids you know? You got to get the little humidity gages. Dont let it go down 55, you can't raise it back up, I mean you can but the cure is over and it doesnt work any more. The closed jar is how to figure out where theyre at. Close for 12-24 hours and you see. If they are over 65 then too high, so leave the top off the jar 24 hour, less if your room is very dry, and close again. Repeat until hits 62. Then do short burps daily. Best I can suggest. YMWV.

Over the past 2 years, I've done METHODICAL testing on drying. The best product comes from drying perfectly to the point that no "cure" is even absolutely even needed, or hardly proves ANY benefit. Target is close to 55% when jarred for the first 2-4 hours, then moisture from inside the core of the buds equalizes causing the RH to slowly raise to around 58-60% after 24-48 hours. Smell, taste, texture etc is as best as its going to get according to feedback from the people who consume my product.

If your product creates higher than 62% RH when you jar it within the first 2-4 hours, you simply haven't dried long enough. Period.
Now, your not having to burp the jars. You're having to let them breathe for for much longer multiple times per week to try to drop RH.

I don't need to burp my product at all. Or shall I say, I do BURP, but ONLY truly just a burp once per week on stored product. This isn't minutes or hours. It's for around 10 seconds, just for a fresh quick air exchange. When you open the top, you are always hit with that GASSY,fruity, pine, sweet etc beautiful smells.

Yeah, I always wondered when curing weed came into being. It certainly didn't exist in the 70's! But, somewhere along the way, people wanted to try and "mummify" the buds in order to preserve them as long as possible with as little degradation as possible....because it might be a long time before you could score again! I guess that was the idea -more for preservation than for enhancing flavors. After all, we used to "store" our weed in plastic sandwich baggies. It was real unsanitary and unsophisticated. Interestingly, those landrace strains were often FULL of flavor and terps without any type of special drying/curing treatment. Go figure! :)

Maybe you need to grow better bud. IMO you should be able to dry 7-10 days and still have good smoke without curing. When you cure, you lose some terps. If done right your bud should be at its best before it even hits the jars.
Yep. I agree. Curing and excessive burping is an excuse for not drying to near perfection IMO. I will say, I do believe a week or 2 in jars can potentially equalize any moisture pockets and smells throughout the product, but I’ve yet to see it actually IMPROVE the product as it’s consumed.

So..does any of this effect THC retention??
Does it degrade if not cured and stored properly?? Just trying to figure out if my blunders have been effecting my weak smoke sometimes.
