Fabric Grow Pots- do they really work?

Getting 2015 grow underway. Last year I had my plants in 12 gallon nursery pots (I have to have them mobile so I can move them quickly when relatives/nosy neighbors come to visit); that's about all I can physically move with my creaky back and knees.

The guy at my "garden" supply store offered an option: Fabric Aeration Pots. He says the fabric pot keeps the roots from growing around the outside of the pot, instead forming a more "efficient" root ball. More important, I can use a smaller fabric pot and have the same results (a 7 gallon fabric pot to replace a 12 gallon nursery pot)- or go with a 10 gallon fabric pots which correlates to a 15-18 gallon container.

Question: What has been your experience with fabric aeration/grow pots? Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I believe they work fine, but find it easier to maneuver a 10 gallon+ if it's rigid plastic. I see what you're sayin about more aeration makes for better efficiency thus smaller containers wld be ok.

only thing i wldnt be in a hurry to reduce the size of the containers, that part won't help crop. focus more on moving large containers less, or rarely ever. use dollies. only ever move plants when they r dry

I have used fabric pots for years with great success,you were given good advice at the "garden store",most have handles,so they are easy to move around.

the fabric pots will take more water, but they work very well. They are not the best for moving around...

Abe- I have tried using dollies in the past but the containers would fall off! I also learned the hard way to wait until the plants/soil is dry before attempting to move the container. I have a while before I need to transplant into the final container

Flash- first thing I noted at the store was that the fabric pots have handles, I thought handles would make it easier to grip the pots when moving

JJ- great point about the watering issue, I will keep an eye on how much to water/feed during the summer & will probably post a thread question on that topic when the time is appropriate. Hopefully I will not have to move the plants often. Glad to hear about your BBQ last fall went well- I thought about flying out from GA but a conflict came up. Maybe this year!
