Alright, so I have 3 barneys farm purple punch photos going. Started germ April 10th, can't remember exact date that they popped but all 3 of em got put in dirt at the same time. I'm about 38 days In id say.
I have a 4x4 box with a viparspectra 450w and a dimmable 600w (gunna return that and buy another 450w) in ffof and have been getting nothing but distilled water as I heard that ffof was good to go for a month or so.
The babies were in their second homes (1 gal) when I noticed the claw happening, I thought over watered em. Leaves were starting to get dark. But I thought purple punch, maybe it's just the strain. Then they started twisting and I was like ok, somethings up. So like any beginner grower, I took to the internet and discovered nitrogen toxicity. I ruled out over watering because they continued clawing even after the soil was dried out. So the internet said flush. So flush I did. 2 days later my babies were reaching for the light. Looking fabulous. 2 days after that, worse than ever. So I figured, maybe flush em again? But I was running low on prepped water so I did a light flush, but they didn't get better. They didn't get worse. But not better like last time. So I thought maybe they were root bound, during those 2 days they grew a lot. So I transplanted up into 7 gals where they are now. Continued clawing. I started getting frustrated so I looked here and found a thread about how ffof can also have crazy ph fluctuations. Again being a beginner, I didn't have proper equipment for ph ing? So distilled water and ffof cuz its PhD already right? So I go get a digital pen and soil prod. Low and behold the soil was like 8. Lucky me I live in a rural area, went to a local ag Co op and asked them to analyze to soil. They confirmed it was super alkaline and I told them this story and they told me how (I'm paraphrasing and could totally be fucking this up so forgive me) basically the nitro tox caused a build up of salts which in turn raised the ph of the soil(?) So to remedy they said 2.5 tblsp of lemon juice per gallon x 3 for every gallon of soil. I ended up doing it, and three days later the babies are looking better and the soil is in the 6-6.5 range
So buyer beware, this could happen to you. But if it does maybe this will help fix it.
And I'm sure more experienced guys will come and say you shoulda done this or that and I'll take that advice so please, lay it on me.
